With the regular season
drawing to a close, the McNary
High School varsity baseball
team is peaking at the right
time.
“It seems like everything
was going right last week,” said
Celt Collin Young. “Our hitting
has been really nice lately and
we’ve been teeing off on pitch-
ers when we need to. We’ve also
kept the ball on the ground a
lot better.”
The Celtics won games
against McKay High School,
12-5, and Forest Grove High
School, 11-3. McNary has lost
only one of its last six games,
and the loss was at the hands
of the Greater Valley Confer-
ence-leading West Salem High
School.
“Baseball is a game of tides,
and it’s good we’re hitting our
tide near the playoffs,” said
Matthew Ismay, a Celtic junior.
The recent success has the
team fi ghting for high stakes in
its fi nal three games of the sea-
son with South Salem, McMin-
nville and Sprague high schools.
The Saxons (8-6) were one
game ahead of McNary (7-
6); the Grizzlies (8-5) have
lost their last three games; and
Sprague (7-6) is coming off a
big win over West Salem.
“We’ve got to win a game
or two to put us in position for
a playoff berth. If we win two,
we’ll probably be in good posi-
tion but, if we win one, it’s go-
ing to depend on which team
we beat,” said Larry Keeker,
McNary head coach. “If every-
thing goes our way, there’s even
a chance we end up as high
as second place in the confer-
ence.”
“I think we’re just keeping
it simple this week,” Young said.
“We have to put the ball in play
like we have been and score
runs behind all our pitchers.”
In McNary’s 12-5 win over
McKay, hot bats led to a 7-1
Celtic lead by the fourth inning
when the Keizer team put fi ve
runs across the plate.
Matt Aguilar and Brendan
Frizelle started things off by
stringing together a pair of sin-
gles. Ismay hit a double to score
Aguilar; Frizelle scored on a
ground out by Young; Trent Van
Cleave hit an RBI-single scor-
ing Ismay; Van Cleave scored on
an error and Daniel Johnson
scored on a wild pitch.
Evan Alger pitched four
innings allowing three hits
and just one run. Carl Rum-
baugh closed out things on the
mound.
Another blistering start
helped McNary take the 11-3
win over Forest Grove.
The Vikings had a 2-0 lead
after half an inning, but the
Celtics scored fi ve runs in the

bottom of the frame to take the
lead and never look back.
The early lead proved help-
ful as McNary’s workhorse
pitcher, Josiah Gilbert, experi-
enced one of his more frustrat-
ing days on the mound. Gilbert
had to be pulled in the fourth
inning due to pitch count.
“Carl came in and pitched
the last three innings throw-
ing strikes and forcing them to
swing the bat and put the ball
in play,” Keeker said.
After hitting several speed
bumps in the early season, Is-
may said the team is fi nally
coming into its own.
“At the beginning of the
season we had a lot of games
where we just weren’t scor-
ing enough to win no matter
how good our pitching was,”
Ismay said. “We’ve tried being
aggressive the whole year and
it worked in fi ts and starts, but
we’re fi nally starting to hit our
stride.”

6-2) last week.
The girls beat North Salem

provement over their tie with
that team in the fi rst round
robin.
“Our No. 1 doubles team,
Blanca (Tepeque) and Tay-
ler (Rains), played their best

convincingly, 6-1, 6-3,” Jensen
said.
Other Celtic match win-
ners were: Krissy Kelty, 6-4,
6-3; Jannicke Martin, 6-1, 6-0;
Mireille Martinez and Maria

In 2015, the Wildcats lost
only one game, their fi rst of
the season, and that was a big
draw, Van Cleave said.
“They have a winning
mentality, a good culture and
a good group of guys. It will
be fun to be part of a winning
program,” he said.
Van Cleave is planning to
study psychology with hopes
of becoming a police offi cer
