MHS Nike grant approved

For the Keizertimes
The Salem-Keizer School
District gained more than $8
million in grants earlier this
month.
Seventeen grants received
School Board approval, the
largest $6,913,032 in federal
Individuals With Disabilities
Act
funds
administered
through
the
Oregon
Department of Education.
It covers mainly special
education staffi ng.
Two of the remaining
funds are focused on McNary
High School. Nike provided
$20,000 to remodel and
upgrade the college and career
center, and ODE provided
$1,050 to allow more students
to attend the state leadership
conference for Future Business
Leaders of America.
The other grants from
ODE are $279,936 for
instructional
services
at
Richmond
Elementary
School, $266,806 for services
and staff and professional
development to assist English
language learners, $198,090
for middle school and high
school summer camps in
career and technical education,
$159,637 for the TeachOregon
extension grant, $37,426 in
IDEA funds for students ages
3 through 5, $21,218 in IDEA
funds for activities, $5,276 in
IDEA funds for In-Program
Schools, and $839 in Long
Term Care and Treatment for
In-Program Schools.
Remaining grants are
$124,320 from the Oregon
Institute of Technology for
professional leadership and
professional
development
in
science,
technology,
engineering and management;
$75,000 from the Oregon
Community Foundation for
children and their families
in
high-poverty,
highly
impacted
areas; $50,000
from OCF for dental health;
$50,950 from OIT for the
district to administer sub-
awards of $3,000 each to 13
school districts for STEM
strategies; and $17,500 from
Early Learning Hub, Inc. for
parenting education.
In other business, the
board approved personnel
actions including hiring Eric
police scanner
Richards as associate director,
student services. He will hold
the position until July 1 and
become director, student
services, on the retirement
of Ruth Gelbrich. Thomas
Charboneau was named as
an elementary principal for
2016-17; his specifi c school
assignment has not yet been
made.
