in track
and fi eld
The
McNary
High
School varsity track and fi eld
teams came up on the los-
ing end of their fi rst dual
meet at Sprague High School
Wednesday, April 6.
The men lost 83-62 and
the women lost 88-53.
Event winners for the
Celtic women were: Danielle
Duran in the 200 meter in
26.92 and the 400 meter in
1:02.25; Paige Downer, Du-
ran, Courtney Geissinger and
Alyssa Looney in the 4x100
relay in 53.06, and Lauren
Loosli in the javelin with a
throw of 90-10.
Celtic event winners for
the men were: Anthony
Nguyen in the 100 meter
in 11.66; Brendan Van Voo-
rhis in 200 meter in 22.64
and the 400 meter in 52.07;
Kody Lewis in the 800 me-
ter in 2:13.98; Michael Reyes
in 3,000 meter in 10:42.57;
Casey Toavs in the 110 and
300 meter hurdles with ties of
18.41 and 45.25, respectively;
Austin Brown, Nguyen, Levi
Timmons and Van Voorhis
in the 4x100 relay in 43.73,
and Jacob Cremer in the pole
vault clearing 11-06.
At the Titan Track Classic
April 1, a handful of Keizer
athletes stood out among the
fi eld of nine teams. Van Voor-
his won the 200 and 400 me-
ter races with times of 22.51
and 50.84 seconds, respec-
tively; and Brown, Timmons,
Nguyen and Van Voorhis won
the 4x100 in 43.55.

Celt baseball starts GVC 1-2
The McNary High School
varsity baseball team scattered
11 runs and allowed only
two in its Greater Valley
Conference opener vs. the
North Salem Vikings Tuesday,
April 5.
The Celics had a 6-0 lead
by the time North Salem
made it to the board in the
bottom of the third. The
best of McNary’s offense was
a four-run third. Working
on two outs, Celt Trent
VanCleave stole second and
advanced to third on an
error by the catcher. McNary

Johnson
brought home VanCleave on
a single. Johnson advanced
to second on a passed ball
and scored on a single by
Tanner Gordon. After two
more singles by Matt Aguilar
and Matthew Ismay, Aguilar
scored on a wild pitch to cap
scoring for the inning.
The Keizer team had
several standouts at the dish.
Johnson 3-for-4 with three
RBIs and a run scored.
Aguilar went 3-for-5 with
two runs scored. Gordon
went 2-for-4 with two RBIs
and a run scored. Ismay and
Josiah Gilbert went 2-for-5
with an RBI each.
McNary could only muster

The Celtics had an 8-5 lead
going into the seventh inning,
but West Albany tied the game
8-8 in the top of the frame,
forcing another inning as the
Celts were held scoreless. The
Bulldogs unloaded for eight
runs in the top of the eighth
and McNary mustered only
two for the 16-10 fi nal.
Emma Kinler and Carr
led at the dish, going 3-for-
5. Kinler had one run scored
and one RBI. Carr had two
runs scored.
The Lady Celts’ game with
McKay High School Tuesday,
April 12 was called off due to
rain after an inning and a half,
but the Keizer girls managed
to do some serious damage in
their time on the fi eld. Mc-
Nary racked up 12 runs in the
fi rst inning.
Oliver and Kinler 2-for-
2 with three RBIs and a run
scored. Duran was 2-for-2
with two RBIs and two runs
scored.

pitched a fi ve-inning no-
hitter in the varsity softball
team’s Greater Valley Confer-
ence opener against North
Salem High School Tuesday,
April 5.
Danner retired 10 batters,
walked none and had 12 fi rst-
pitch strikes en route to 21-0
win for McNary.
The Celts had a 17-0 lead
after two innings and added
four in the third. Leaders at
the plate were: Madisen Oli-
ver with fi ve RBIs on three
hits, Nadia Witt with three
RBIs on three hits and Nicole
Duran with three hits, two
RBIs and a home run. Oliver
and Witt both had a pair of
doubles. Danner and Sabella
Alfaro both went 3-for-4 with
four RBIs between them.
Three days later, the Celt-
ics hosted West Albany High
School in a grueling battle
decided in the eighth inning.
West Albany opened scor-
ing with a three-run fi rst, but
the Celtics evened the fi eld
5-5 with a three-run fourth.
Hannah Carr scored on a sac-
four hits – two from the bat of
Joshua Benson – and no runs
in its game with West Salem
High School Wednesday,
April 6. Meanwhile, the Titans
racked up 13 runs on 13 hits
en route to the win.
Struggles at the plate
continued in McNary’s third
and fi nal game of the week
vs. West Albany High School
Friday, April 8. The Bulldogs
outhit McNary 12-3 and
the game ended under 10-
run mercy rules in the sixth
inning.

The McNary High School
boys varsity golf team is off to
a rollicking start this season.
The Celts have won two of
the fi rst three league tourna-
ment.
On March 18, the boys
traveled to Lebanon’s Mal-
lard Creek Golf Course and
walked away with a win. The
Keizer team was 11 strokes
under their nearest competi-
tor, West Salem High School,
with a 336. Celt senior Brady
Sparks had the third-best
game of the tournament with
an 81.
On Monday, April 11, at
Forest Hills Golf Club, Mc-
Nary eked out a one-stroke
win, 311-312, over the Ti-
tans for their second victory.
Sparks shot an 82, Adam Ra-
schko shot a 72, Casey Patme-
sil shot an 87, Riley Hancock
shot a 77 and Teegan Papile
shot an 80. Raschko tied with
two West Albany High School
golfers for the best score of the
day.
The Celts’ next tourna-
ment will be at McNary Golf
Club Monday, April 18. Tee
time is noon.
