BETTER THAN NEW
McNary AVID to
expand with help
of Nike grant
By HERB SWETT
For the Keizertimes
Five grants to the Salem-Keizer School District, totaling
$391,569, were approved by the School Board on Tuesday.
The largest, $266,806 from the Oregon Department of Edu-
cation, is a Title III carryover that provides services and staff
development to assist English language learners.
Also coming from ODE are $21,203 to help neglected and
delinquent youth transition to further schooling and prevent at-
risk students from dropping out, and $12,441 to provide educa-
tional services to students in in-program schools, an alternative
for court-adjudicated students in grades 6 through 12 who have
academic and behavioral defi ciencies.
The other grants are $45,876 from the Nike College and
Career Readiness Program, supporting AVID (Advancement
Via Individual Determination) expansion in McNary, McKay,
North Salem and South Salem high schools; and $45,270 from
Western Oregon University for teachers to take courses in
teaching English as a second language.
The board also approved far more teaching and administra-
tive contracts than usual. For the McNary High School atten-
dance area, contracts were approved for 19 people at McNary,
19 at Claggett Creek Middle School, seven at Whiteaker Middle
School, fi ve at Clear Lake Elementary School, seven at Cum-
mings, one at Forest Ridge, four at Gubser, 15 at Kennedy, seven
at Keizer, 13 at Weddle and one for a teacher at Forest Ridge.
In other business, the board approved a resolution proclaim-
ing the week of March 7 through 11 as Classifi ed Employee
Appreciation Week.
Preceding the regular meeting was a board work session on
charter schools. Although the board cannot take action at a work
session, board members agreed that charter schools should be
tied to the district’s strategic plan.
Director Jim Green noted that Salem-Keizer has the largest
numbers of English language learners and students below the
poverty level of any district in Oregon. He urged that those facts
be addressed in the case of any application for a charter school.
Other directors present agreed.
“We don’t want cut-and-paste applications,” Superintendent
Christy Perry said.
The district has four charter schools: Optimum Learning
Environments, Keizer, for grades 1 through 5; Howard Street
Charter School, Salem, for grades 6 through 8; Jane Goodall En-
vironmental Middle School, Salem, for grades 6 through 8; and
Valley Inquiry Charter School, Salem, for kindergarten through
fi fth grade.
The fi rst district budget committee meeting will be at 6 p.m.
Tuesday in the board’s usual meeting place, the Support Services
Center at 2575 Commercial St. SE, Salem. The budget com-
mittee consists of the board members and seven other district
residents.
