Hingston’s 12 points were
part of a triple-double that
included 11 assists and 10
rebounds. McNary Head
Coach Derick Handley said
it was the fi rst time in his six
years as a coach that one of his
players had a triple-double.
Handley
installed
the
trap defense and full-court
man coverage about midway
through the season and said the
girls are still working on the
trust that is crucial to pulling
it off.
“It’s still a struggle from
them to leave the girl they’re
defending and know that
a teammate will be there,”
Handley said. “It’s the type of
defense we’re going to see from
the more athletic teams in the
state, but they don’t do it for as
long as our girls are capable of.
We have the best conditioning
of any team out there.”
With McNary headed for
a second place fi nish in the
Greater Valley Conference,
Flores said the team is in a good
place.
“We just need to believe in
ourselves. The goal is to get to
the state tournament,” she said.
Handley hoped the team
could use a game with McKay
High School Tuesday, Feb. 23,
to get on a hot streak with its
offense.
“We want to get the girls
who are outside shooters
knocking down their shots and
the girls who are big rebounders
getting in and boxing out. We
want to make sure that we’re at
the top of our game,” he said.

“Honestly, I was just having
a good day at districts. After I
touched the wall in the 200 I
had to look at the board twice.
That was super exciting,”
Kuch said. “After I touched
the wall in the 100 free, the
timer was like, ‘You did it.’ I
still don’t think I realized what
I’d done until I got on the po-
dium and they announced it.”
Kuch will swim with her
club team in Arizona next
week to compete on an even
larger stage. She’s chasing the
cut times for the junior na-
tional swimming competi-
tions.
“My ultimate goal is to
get a Division I scholarship,”
Kuch said.

Harvey tied the game 38-38
on a lay-in and Van Cleave put
the Celts up 40-38 half a min-
ute later.
By the end of the third quar-
ter McNary was ahead 54-50
and had outscored Sprague 29-
15.
“The urgency changes for us
in the second half. That’s when
we get aggressive and start go-
ing at it. I think it really shocks
the other team. They go into
halftime thinking they’re going
to win and then we come out
in the second half and its like a
whole different team they have
to play,” Goff said.
In the fourth frame, Sprague
got as close as four points, but
McNary hit more free throws
for the 69-62 fi nal.
“Particularly in the third
quarter, we did better trapping
them up and getting some de-
fl ections and that made the
difference down the stretch,”
Kirch said.
The Celtics were set to face
McKay High School Tuesday,
Feb. 23, in the fi nal Greater
Valley Conference game of the
season.
While McNary won the two
teams’ last encounter 102-70,
Martin said McNary was set for
a battle.
“They’re a good team and
we need to treat them like one.
We need to play them as if we
were playing South Salem,”
Martin said.
Kirch said the game plan was
fairly similar to the fi rst time
around.
“They want to create a hec-
tic pace and we have to not only
break their pressure but attack
their pressure,” he said. “We did
a nice job of that the fi rst time
we played, but we have to con-
tain their attack on the rim.”
