McNary AD honored by SKSB
By HERB SWETT
For the Keizertimes
Grants to the Salem-Keiz-
er School District totaling
$567,788 were approved by
the School Board on Tuesday.
The largest, $475,518 from
the Oregon Department of
Education, involves McNary
and West Salem high schools.
The programs are in culinary
arts at McNary and fi re science
at West Salem. In the McNary
program, students acquire ad-
vanced culinary skills working
in a commercial kitchen.
Five other grants from ODE
are $30,565 for identifi cation
and comprehensive educa-
tional programs for migrant
children, $24,643 in annual
System Performance Review
and Funding for performance
data collection and reporting
for special education, $19,800
to support training toward
statewide assessments of stu-
dents with disabilities, $12,596
in reimbursements of costs of
Oregon-grown and -pro-
cessed food, and $3,000 for
physical fi tness for elementary
students.
The board learned that
Salem-Keizer Head Start had
earned the highest rating (fi ve
stars) from the state’s Quality
Rating Improvement System,
which involves an in-depth
review by ODE.
In other business, the board
renewed the charters for Op-
timum Learning Environ-
mental School and Valley In-
quiry School.
Fewer personnel actions
than usual were approved,
with none focused on the
McNary attendance area.
In the Spotlight on Success
portion of the meeting, Ron
Richards, McNary athletic di-
rector, was announced to have
won the Distinguished Ser-
vice Award from the National
Interscholastic Athletic Ad-
ministrators Association. The
award was presented to Rich-
ards at the National Athletic
Directors Conference in Or-
lando, Fla., in December.
“The bottom line is that
Ron cares about kids,” John
Honey, former McNary prin-
cipal, said in nominating him.
“He wants them to have a
wide range of opportunities
to connect with the school,
their peers, coaches and the
community. He helps them
develop chances to fi nd im-
provement, success, personal
satisfaction and pride through
their effort.”
Two people spoke from
the audience. Ross Swartzen-
druber of Salem, a parent, said
he was opting out of achieve-
ment testing, as were hundreds
of thousands of other parents
around the United States, be-
cause they wanted more local
control of education. Joseph
Nelson of Salem, also a parent,
said more nutritional infor-
mation on school meals was
needed.

Perry gets high marks from Board
By HERB SWETT
For the Keizertimes
Superintendent
Christy
Perry of the Salem-Keizer
School District received high
marks from the School Board
in a work session that followed
the board’s regular meeting
Tuesday.
The annual evaluation for
Perry, who recently completed
her fi rst academic year in her
current position, was for the
2014-15 school year. The board
based its evaluation on student
performance against state aver-
ages, graduation rates, dropout
rates, English language learner
performance, and growth in
the percentage of schools that
show above-average growth
compared to similar schools in
Oregon.
The board’s report noted
that Perry had worked for staff
compliance with district poli-
cies and reported small areas of
non-compliance to the board
regularly. It said she had devel-
oped “excellent relationships”
with the board and community
partners including the Salem
Area Chamber of Commerce
and Chemeketa Community
College.
Although the board stated
that academic scores were not
“where we would like them
to be,” its report said there
are many factors in the scores
for which she should not be
blamed. It said Perry “has done
an admirable job of moving
and maintaining our academic
scores.”
The board will hold one
more work session this month,
at 6 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Support
Services Center in Salem.

Q: What types of glass can be recycled?
©1986
A: Food grade bottles and jars only!
Other types of glass contaminate the recycling
process and ruin newly made containers.
That means, NO cups, dishes, candleholders,
ovenware, window or mirror glass, or
light bulbs. Thanks for your careful attention!
