Calls for Keizer Fire services hit new peak
It was a record-breaking
year for the Keizer Fire Dis-
trict.
District crews responded to
4,512 calls for service in 2015
compared to 4,132 calls for
service in 2014. The increase
marks the fi fth straight year
the district has seen an in-
crease in emergency responses.
During the last ten years, KFD
has seen a 35 percent increase
in calls.
Medical crews responded
to 3,476 requests for emer-
gency medical service. That
category of calls covers people
who are injured in accidents
or suffering from medical
conditions such as heart at-
tacks, falls and strokes.
District fi refi ghters re-
sponded to a total of 71 fi re
calls. Of that number, 29 were
for residential fi res which
include private homes and
apartments.
Other types of calls for ser-
vice included 112 smoke, fi re
or carbon monoxide alarms,
351 public assists, and 350 re-
sponses for various types of
other service calls. The district
also responded to 152 requests
for assistance from other fi re
agencies.
To manage the increase in
calls for service the fi re district
applied for two SAFER grants
from FEMA in 2013 and
2015. The grants are designed
to help departments provide
adequate staffi ng to improve
fi refi ghter safety and to serve
local residents.
Keizer used the FEMA
grants to hire two fi refi ghter/
paramedics and three fi re-
fi ghter/EMTs. The additional
staffi ng has helped in reducing
the strain on our emergency
response system, said district
offi cials. Keizer voters also
approved a bond measure in
November which is helping
to replace aging equipment
and vehicles.

you always have something

“They looked good com-
ing out of the break and
those two duals looked good,
but our last four duals will be
our real challenge this sea-
son,” J. Ebbs said. “The last
four duals will be where the
world can change. Each of
them is going to come down
to four or fi ve key matches.”
It will be almost two full
weeks before McNary gets
another bite at the Saxon ap-
ple – and it will have to main-
tain an even keel through
some tough opponents – but
Goff expected the Celts to
be a different team next time
around.
“We have to play with a
bit of a chip on our shoul-
der. They next time we face
(South), they’re going to
think they can beat us but
it defi nitely will not happen
again,” he said.

“We put in a new full-
court defense. It forced us to
communicate a lot more, but
our offense was a little rocky,”
said Strand.
After a 13-2 fi rst quarter,
the Celts “let Sprague hang
with them for the next two
quarters,” said Handley.
By the start of the fourth
quarter, the Lady Celts had
only extended their lead to
36-21.
“It wasn’t bad, we just ex-
pected more after the fi rst
quarter,” Handley said.
Hunter led all scoring with
23 points for the night, Hings-
ton had 11 and Strand had 5.
“I think I’m getting more
confi dence to shoot, I’ve had
a few games where I’ve strug-
gled this year but it was nice
to see the shot going in against
Sprague,” said Hunter. She was
only nine points away from
the school record.
