Today in History
Heavy smog begins to hover over London. It persists for
four days leading to the deaths of more than 4,000 people.
A high-pressure air mass stalled over the Thames River
Valley, a cold air front trapped the the high-pressure air
in place. The cold temperature caused residents to burn
extra coal. The resulting smoke, soot and sulfur dioxide
caused smog that smothered the city.

In recent weeks, the Keiz-
ertimes has run a Chasing Dark
series, looking at the growing
heroin epidemic in Keizer.
Links to full stories will be
in a special section of the Keiz-
ertimes website (www.keizer-
times.com) this weekend.
Throughout the series of
stories, parents and law en-
forcement personnel alike
have shared advice, tips and re-
sources to help families. Here
is a recap of some of that in-
formation:
Signs your child could
be doing heroin
• Bottles disappearing from
the medicine cabinet
• Items around the house
suddenly disappearing or
money missing from purses/
wallets
• A sudden withdrawal so-
cially from the family
• Messages on social media
about drugs. The problem is
most of the times the messages
will be private.
• Those going through
withdrawals will be extremely
weak and unable to keep food
down.
• Excessive drowsiness
• Losing track of time
• Excessive use of cotton
swabs
• Pick marks around the
face
• Weight loss
• Dark circles under the
eyes
• Lack of smiling
• Dirtiness, especially under
the fi ngernails
• Parents and authorities
alike agreed those who are
caught in an addiction need to
feel free to talk openly about

what they are going through,
without feeling judged. Build-
ing trust is critical.
• Jeff and Hollie Crist,
whose son Brandon died of a
heroin overdose in September,
said if parents suspect some-
thing is going on, trust that
instinct.
What to do
• Benton County offers
a needle exchange program;
such a program isn’t offered
in Marion County. Informa-
tion about the Benton County
program and other harm re-
duction programs: http://
harmreduction.org/connect-
locally/oregon/
• Bottles of old medications
can be turned in at the turn-
in receptacle at the Keizer Po-
lice Department, no questions
asked.
• Sometimes drug court
programs are utilized, forcing
users to stop doing drugs. The
problem, many involved in the
series agree, is users need to
make the decision themselves

Sex offender arrested on new charges
A Keizer sex offender was
arrested recently for encour-
aging child sexual abuse.
Larry Lee Edwards, 51,
was charged with 10 counts
of the crime on Nov. 19. Ed-
wards was arrested and taken
to the Marion County Cor-
rectional Facility with a bail of
$200,000.
At 1:20 p.m. on Nov. 19,
investigators with the Keizer
Police Department served a
search warrant at the Edwards
residence at 4090 Hennessy
Lane NE in Keizer. The war-
rant was issued by Marion
County Circuit Court based
on a cyber tip that Edwards,
a registered predatory sex of-
fender in Oregon, was in-
volved in the posting of child
por nog raphy
online. More
infor mation
about
Ed-
wards’ sex of-
fender history
is available at
http://sexof-
Edwards
fenders.or-
egon.gov/.
Edwards was taken into
custody without incident and
charged with 10 counts of en-
couraging child sexual abuse
in the fi rst degree. He was
arraigned the next day and
charged with 10 additional
counts. According to the KPD,
thousands of images and vid-
eos of child pornography were
recovered from electronic
media in Edwards’ possession
when the warrant was served
at his home.
“At this time, there is no
evidence to lead investigators
to believe Mr. Edwards has
sexually abused any new vic-
tims,” a KPD statement read.
“However, due to the allega-
tion Mr. Edwards has commit-
ted the new crimes of encour-
aging child sexual abuse and
based on the severity of Mr.
Edwards’ past crimes/convic-
tions and the fact he is a reg-
istered predatory sex offender,
the Keizer Police Department
is issuing this media release as
we feel it is in the public’s in-
terest to do so.”
Anyone who has witnessed
any suspicious and/or crimi-
nal activity involving Edwards
is asked to contact KPD de-
tective Ben Howden at 503-
856-3525 or howdenb@
keizer.org.
The KPD is actively in-
vestigating and pursuing all
those who possess, exchange,
distribute or produce images
and/or videos of child por-
nography.
