Boys beat Bulldogs By ERIC A. HOWALD Of the Keizertimes McNary High School’s Michael Reyes has a message for those tempted to read too much into the boys varsity soccer team’s recent struggles. “I want people to know that it isn’t over. We’re still de- fending champs from last year. Not all the games go the way you want them to, but we’re still here,” Reyes said. “We’re still a strong team, we just need to keep working on our passes and finishing,” added Celt Jorge Garcia. The Celtics lost their last game of the preseason and then tied North Salem High School in their Greater Valley Conference opener, but the team was back to its winning ways in a contest with West Albany High School Friday, Oct. 2. McNary won 5-0 after set- ting the tone early and often. In the second minute of the game, Bryan Keo scored from about 20 yards out on an assist by Luis Martinez. Keo assisted on the next goal by Gustavo Villalvazo in the fourth min- ute. Jose Daniel Caballero was next to the net on an assist by Keo in the 20th minute, and Villalvazo scored on a solo shot in the 36th minute. After the half, Paulo Reyes scored on an assist by Martinez in the 70th minute. “We’ve been working on keeping possession and being safe with the ball to create the bigger chances. That was the game where we started play- ing better with our passes,” M. Reyes said. Goalkeeper Sebastian Lo- pez made one save in the game. Hunter Miller recorded three. The next contests in line for McNary included a road game with McKay High School Tuesday, Oct. 6, and a home game with the GVC- leading McMinnville Griz- zlies Thursday, Oct. 8. Mc- Minnville was the top-ranked team in the state at press time. “I want to come out strong with pressure and get our passing and finishing on point in both games,” M. Reyes said.
