Lady Celt soccer cruises to 5-1
By ERIC A. HOWALD
Of the Keizertimes
The McNary High School
girls varsity soccer team con-
tinued its upward arc with a
pair of wins last week.
“It just felt like the vibe
was good and everyone was
playing off of each other in
both games,” said Lady Celt
Jessy Shore.
Shore scored a hat trick
in McNary’s Greater Val-
ley conference opener, a 5-1
win over North Salem High
School Friday, Sept. 25. Prior
to that, the Celtics beat Roo-
sevelt High School 5-0 Tues-
day, Sept. 22.
Both Shore and teammate
Kayla Evans said developing
connections off the fi eld is
translating into wins on the
pitch.
“I think we’re bonding
more off the fi eld and it’s
helping on the fi eld. We used
to just pass the ball and leave
it out there for someone else
to chase, now we have a lot
more direction and purpose,”
Evans said.
Shore added that the
change is a welcome one
from last season.
“Last year, we were a little
disconnected. We used to just
pass each other in the halls
during school, but now we
stop and talk. We have the
whole ‘we take care of each
other’ thing going on,” Shore
said.
It didn’t take the Lady
Celts long to show which
way the winds were blow-
ing in the game with North
Salem.
In the fi fth minute, Shore
opened the scoring with
a shot from outside placed
over the keeper. Ten minutes
later, Shore put a ball across
the goal that was fi nished in
the lower right corner by Ev-
ans. In the 19th minute Gina
Munguia put a hard shot on
frame, forcing a save by the
North Salem goalie that was
cleaned up and fi nished in the
lower corner by Shore.
In the 27th minute, Lady
Celt Abby Smith carried the
ball through the midfi eld
with multiple combination
passes, and was fouled inside
the box resulting in a pen-
alty kick. Smith fi nished the
PK in the lower right hand
corner, giving the Celts a 4-0
lead heading into the half.
In the 58th minute North
capitalized on a free kick with
a driven shot into the upper
left corner of the goal from
just outside the box. Shore
completed her hat trick in
the 68th minute with an un-
assisted goal in the upper left
corner.
In the Roosevelt game, the
Lady Celts had a 3-0 lead at
the half and extended it to
5-0 by the fi nal siren.
The Lady Celts’ meteoric
rise already has them on the
cusp of ensuring a state play-
off appearance, but contribu-
tions have come from up and
down the roster. Fourteen
of the girls have contributed
with a goal or an assist in their
six games with a record of
5-1, including three shutouts.
The Keizer team is posting
the toughest defense in the
GVC with just four goals al-
lowed and are tied for the best
offense alongside West Salem
with 23 goals scored.
Evans thinks the team has
yet more potential to fulfi ll as
long as they can make some
minor tweaks.
“I know I’m always on
the fi eld yelling for people to
switch. I really think if we just
open up our hips and switch
the direction of play more
we’ll be even better,” Evans
said.

Grizzlies, Vikings
block Celtic path
By ERIC A. HOWALD
Of the Keizertimes
In the next six days,
McNary High School’s varsity
football team will face two
teams looking for their fi rst
Greater Valley Conference
wins. And the Celtics learned
last week how dangerous a
position that can be.
On Friday, Sept. 25,
McNary lost its fi rst league
match to McKay High School
10-7. McKay entered into the
contest without a win.
“We had a lot of mental
errors on offense, but the
atmosphere was crazy with
rain and their homecoming
crowd, and we weren’t really
expecting it,” said Celt
LaCroix Hill.
McNary hosts McMinnville
High School Friday, Oct. 2,
and the Keizer team is on the
hunt for redemption.
“Our focus wasn’t there and
we underestimated McKay,
but I have confi dence we’ll
come back and take the win
over McMinnville this week,”
said Shawn Snyder, a McNary
senior.
In 2014, McNary beat the
Grizzlies with a last-second
fi eld goal. McMinnville went
on to fi nish 1-8 for the season
and it currently sits in last
place in the GVC with an 0-4
record.
The Grizzlies have scored
75 points to their opponents’
137, but last week’s 20-17 loss
to North Salem High School
was its closest yet. McMinnville
was also up 17-0 before North
rallied for the win.
One of the bright spots
for the Celtics last week was
its defense. The team ended
several McKay drives early
and came up with big stops
and interceptions in clutch
fashion. However, the offense
struggled for much of the
game. Quarterback Trent Van
Cleave completed 5 of 12 for
64 yards in the air and churned
out 100 yards on 13 carries.
Senior running back Brady
Sparks piled up 126 yards on
24 rushes. Sparks also had
three catches for 30 yards on
the night.
Celtic senior Hayden Sader
said the McNary team needed
to focus on the things it could
control in the game.
“We have to get more
excited about the good things
we do on offense and defense.
We had several good runs
against McKay and we were
just quiet on the sidelines,”
Sader said.
On Oct. 8, McNary travels
to meet the Forest Grove
High School Vikings in a rare
Thursday game.
The Vikings are 1-3 for the
season and 0-3 in the GVC.
The team’s latest 43-33 loss
came at the hands of Sprague
High School. Forest Grove
led the game until a 15-point
fourth quarter for the Olys.
“We have to bounce back
and have the best week of
practice so far,” Sader said. “It’s
coming down to execution,
focusing on our assignments
and each person doing their
job.”
Netters survive Oly test
By ERIC A. HOWALD

The McNary High School
varsity volleyball team had
its mettle tested in a four-set
match with Sprague High
School Thursday, Sept. 24.
After taking a 25-11 win in
the contest’s fi rst set, the Lady
Celts dropped a close second
set 23-25. The Keizer team
rebounded to obliterate the
Olys 25-9 in the third set, but
then the wheels came off in
the fourth.
McNary was down 19-8
before staging an epic rally to
win the set and match with a
score of 27-25.
“The girls played together
the entire match and game
four showed what we can do,”
said Kellie Scholl, McNary
head coach. “Kaelie Flores
had a great night and kept the
team together, especially in our
fourth set. Vanessa Hayes played
great again and Kylie Gilmour
had a great defensive night.”
Scholl also credited Madi
Hingston with superb pass-
ing and Sam Van Voorhis with
great delivery to the outside
hitters.
Hayes had a blistering 24
kills in the match and fi ve aces.

bound over Sprague was the
result of the team recommit-
ting to their goals in the wake
of a loss to West Albany High
School.
“It translates into us all
stepping up and doing our
part and playing for each oth-
er,” Hunter said. “We have a
tendency to fall down when
someone makes a mistake
when what we need to do is
turn the page.”
Senior Madie Cloyd said
the match was also something
of a wake-up call.
“I think we need to realize
that we can’t just go out on
the court and expect to blow
through the other teams. The
other teams in the Greater
Valley Conference are good
and every one of them has a
chance. Sometimes we get
caught up in thinking they’re
a team that we beat last year
and they should be no prob-
lem,” Cloyd said.
Prior to the Sprague match,
the girls beat the North Salem
High School Vikings in three
sets. After setting the tone
with an opening 25-14 set
