Boys soccer takes fi rst loss, 5-1

McNary’s Luis Martinez leaps out ahead of Jesuit High School defenders in the game Friday, Sept. 25.
Freshmen lose heartbreaker
McNary High School’s freshman football
team lost a 22-20 heartbreaker to West Albany
High School at home Thursday, Sept. 17.
“It was a hard fought game that unfortu-
nately one team had to lose” said Head Coach
Ted Anagnos.
The Celts fall to 1-2 on the season and 1-1
in the Greater Valley Conference.
McNary opened the scoring after Jacob
Jackson forced a Bulldog fumble recovered by
Griffi n Oliveira. The Celtics marched back up
the fi eld led by running backs Clay Mary and
Chantz Revis and a 24-yard pass from Jack-
son to Oliveira. The drive culminated with a
fi ve-yard Jackson run on a quarterback keeper.
Revis ran in the conversion for an 8-0 McNary
lead.
McNary’s defense put up the stops and
turned over the ball to the offense, which drove
for a second quarter touchdown on a 25-yard
pass from Jackson to Oliveira for a 14-0 score
at the half.
West Albany began their comeback in the
third quarter with a three-yard run for a score.

When the Jesuit High
School boys varsity soccer
team scored in the fi rst 30
seconds of a game with the
McNary High School Celt-
ics, it was easy to tell some-
thing was off with the Keizer
team.
“We came out scared of
their history and I wasn’t
sure we were ready to play. It
didn’t look like we had any
energy,” said Celt Bryan Keo.
McNary was able to tie the
game at 1-1 shortly thereaf-
ter, but it had no response to
the Crusaders next four goals
en route to a 5-1 loss.
“We weren’t on our A-
game and they beat us in the
air,” said Luis Audelo, a Mc-
Nary senior.
Miguel Camarena, Mc-
Nary head coach, said the
game was a wake-up call for
the Celtics who went into
the game undefeated (5-
0) ,having only allowed six

in the fourth quarter tied the game at 14-14.
The teams exchanged failed drives then
the Celtics broke through with fi ve minutes
remaining on a 70-yard pass from Jackson to
Mary for a 20-14 lead.
After the teams each held defensively, West
Albany took the ball and drove 60 yards in the
last minute to capture the win on a 20-yard
pass completion and two-point conversion pass
with 15 seconds remaining to get the 22-20
win.
McNary gained 109 yards rushing by Jack-
son, Revis, Mary and Boston Smith. Jackson
passed for 137 yards to Oliveira, Mary and Ty
Covalt.
Celt alum, and now linebacker coach, Brian
Aicher complimented the play of his lineback-
ers – Oliveira, Smith, Bo Working and Noah
Bach – for their play anchoring a defensive
performance that saw 21 different players make
tackles. Jackson led with 10 tackles; Smith and
Robert Benson added fi ve each; and Mary,
Working, Devyn Schurr and Nigel Harris had
four each.

Netters rebound,

McNary High School’s var-
sity volleyball team bounced
back from its fi rst league loss
to take a 3-0 win over McKay
High School Tuesday, Sept. 15.
“In the second set, it be-
came a fi ve-point game and
that was a test, but we came
together and pulled it out,”
said Lady Celt Jaylene Mon-
tano.
Set scores were 25-14, 25-
20 and 25-17. Vanessa Hayes
led the offense with eight kills
on the night. Reina Strand put
down fi ve. Kylie Gilmour led
McNary’s defense with nine
digs and she served up fi ve
aces.
“We were communicating
a lot more than we did with
West Albany, and we created
more plays that helped us get
ahead,” said Gilmour.
McNary Head Coach Kel-
lie Scholl also credited Valerie
Diede with tough play in the
match.

goals for the season.
“A lot of the kids were
thinking we are the best team
and we found out we are
not,” Camarena said. “They
need to understand that
they’re not playing against
pros, they’re playing against
a high school team and that
means they can fi ght for ev-
ery ball for 80 minutes.”
The loss came on the heels
of an 8-1 win for McNary
over Dallas High School’s
Dragons.
“We were passing well and
fi nishing the opportunities
that we had,” Audelo said.
McNary was up 5-0 at the
half and put away three more
goals in the last 40 minutes.
Camarena said the game
showed the Celtics’ abili-
ties to open up the fi eld for
scoring, but it made the loss
to Jesuit all the more disap-
pointing.
“The players will be deal-
ing with the mental aspect of

Timely defensive stops and
just enough offense helped
the McNary High School var-
sity football team survive its
encounter with West Albany
High School Friday, Sept. 18.
“We did a good job of get-
ting inside our gaps and chas-
ing down guys when they got
away,” said Celt Jon Anderson.
“We were also really persistent
and didn’t just roll over after
they made some of their big
plays.”
McNary won 31-22.
Overall, Jeff Auvinen, Mc-
Nary head coach, said the game
showed signs of improvement
over the previous week.
“Our effort was a little bet-
ter than it was against West-
view (two weeks ago) and we
stayed after them a little more.
We could have gone belly-up,
but we resurrected ourselves
and we had the huge clinching
drive,” Auvinen said.
The Bulldogs started the
game with possession, but the
Celtic defense prevented a fi rst
down after the kickoff. Mc-
Nary’s fi rst time in the driver’s
seat saw quarterback Trent Van
Cleave connect on a 24-yard
pass to Matt Aguilar to re-
set the chains on the opening
play. After that, McNary went
to the ground game and Celt
Brady Sparks pushed the ball
to the Bulldog 33-yard line.
Another big reception by Kyle
Aicher on a fourth down at-
tempt put McNary just outside
the West Albany red zone. Van
Cleave ran the ball up to the
fi ve-yard line on a keeper and
then punched through for a
touchdown two plays later.
Celt Gustavo Villalvazo, on
loan from the McNary boys
varsity soccer team, split the
uprights on the point-after for
a 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs fumbled on
the second play of their next
drive and McNary recovered
to give the Celtics a short fi eld
starting at the West Albany 37-
yard line.
Van Cleave struck again
from the nine-yard line at 3:05
in the fi rst to cushion the Celt-
ic lead at 14-0.
