Defensive line coach and
former Celtic center Todd
Hatley credited Brent Preston
with some nice play on the
defensive line.
Offensive line coach Geoff
White, another McNary alum,
praised Jabez Rhoades for his
much improved effort this
week.
“These kids are tough and
will bounce back” said An-
agnos. “They improved sub-
stantially over the last three
weeks and I expect that will
continue.”
the game all season long and
they have to live up to their
own expectations,” he said.
McNary plays its fi rst game
of Greater Valley Conference
competition at North Salem
High School Friday, Sept 25,
and Keo was grateful for the
time to prepare and regroup
before hitting the fi eld again.
“We have four days to train
hard and focus on the league
games. We have to keep work-
ing hard on our passing and
touches and keeping posses-
sion of the ball,” Keo said.

For proof of just how far
the McNary High School girls
varsity soccer team has come
in one short year, look no fur-
ther than its offensive numbers.
“We’ve already had 12 play-
ers make the stat sheet with a
score or an assist and you play
11 on the fi eld. Last year, for
the whole season, we only had
seven players with a goal or
an assist,” said AJ Nash, Celtic
head coach. “That means we
have a very unselfi sh attack
with the entire team engaged
on every possession.”
The Lady Celts improved
their record to 3-1 last week
with a 5-0 win over Central
High School and a 2-0 loss to
Newberg High School.
In the Central game Tues-
day, Sept. 15, the Celtics had
expected to be leading the
game by halftime, but the
teams went to the sidelines
0-0.
“We talked during halftime
and then came back and got
three goals right away in the
fi rst 10 minutes,” said Kolbie
Kopp, a McNary junior. “We
had underestimated them in
the fi rst half.”
Scorers were Michaela San-
chez, Kopp, Natalia Gonzalez,
and Jessy Shore, who put away
two goals in the game.
On Thursday, Sept. 17, Mc-
Nary battled with Newberg
High School to a 2-0 defeat,
but the team showed vast im-
provement over a game with
the Tigers in 2014.
“Even in the loss there was
a lot more passing,” said Abi-
gail Smith, a McNary junior.
“That was the fi rst team that
had a strong offense and they
pressured our defense a whole
lot.”
“I think they were one of
the more fi t teams that we
played and we weren’t pre-
pared for that. They had an
intensity that we didn’t,” Kopp
added.
While McNary was unable
to capitalize on mistakes by
Newberg, the parity between
the two teams on the fi eld left
Nash feeling good about the
Celtic prospects this season.
“Even though we lost 2-0,
we had equal opportunities
against Newberg. Last year,
they had 33 shots on goal and
this year they only had two.
That game could have gone
either way this time around,”
he said.
McNary hosts its fi rst
league contest Friday, Sept.
25, with North Salem High
School. Smith said the Mc-
Nary team has a message for
the Greater Valley Conference
teams this season.
“I want the other teams to
know we are a competitor this
year and we’re not just going
to roll over,” she said.
