PAGE A10, KEIZERTIMES, SEPTEMBER 25, 2015 DAWGS, continued from Page A8 KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. Howald McNary’s Gustavo Villalvazo splits the uprights from 22 yards out in the game with West Albany High School Friday, Sept. 18. Villalvazo recently became the team’s place kicker, usually he is on the fi eld with the boys soccer team. Both teams ended the next several drives without scoring, but McNary’s cause was bolstered with key stops from the likes of Shawn Snyder, Isaiah Holt, Tanner Gordon, Trevor Guzman, Kolby Barker, Hayden Sader and Anderson. “We picked it up in practice as far as tackling which gave us trouble in the Westview game. The coaches made sure we were ready for that this game,” Aicher said. West Albany scored on a one-play drive with 4:38 left in the half to make the score 14-8. The Celts responded with a long drive that ended in a 22-yard fi eld goal by Villalvazo at the horn. The teams retreated to the locker room with Mc- Nary in the lead 17-8. McNary’s fi rst drive of the second half saw the team attempt a 46-yard fi eld goal that fell short. West Albany made the most of their fi rst possession to narrow the gap between the teams to 17-16 on a touchdown and two-point conversion. “We were going to the play correct- ly, but we weren’t hitting hard enough to get off the blocks,” Anderson said. McNary returned to the ground game on a drive that spanned the break between the third and fourth quarters. Aguilar gave the Keizer team excellent fi eld position with a kickoff return to the Celtic 48-yard line. Sparks notched a pair of fi rst down sprints through the middle and Van Cleave connected with Aicher to give the team some breathing room with a touchdown. McNary led 24-16 with 10:01 left to play. A pass interference call rekindled the Bulldogs’ next drive and the West Albany team scored on a breakaway touchdown run. A two-point conver- sion attempt ended a yard from the end zone to preserve a 24-22 McNary lead. Van Cleave and Sparks traded run- ning duties on the next drive as the team quickly moved the ball back up the fi eld. The drive ended when Sader pulled Van Cleave into the end zone on a short run from the fi ve-yard line. With the point-after, McNary lead 31-22. West Albany took back the ball with 2:01 left on the clock and ended the game with a “Hail Mary” that fell in- complete at the horn. “We had good contributions from all over the place. Brady had some hard- earned yards and Trent made some gutsy plays and we had a couple of re- ceivers step up. Kyle Aicher played hard on both sides of the ball with one good hand and showing a ton of character,” Auvinen said. Scots, Celts battle Friday By ERIC A. HOWALD Of the Keizertimes Neither the players nor head coach of the McNary High School varsity football team believe the team has lived up to its potential so far this season. They’ll get another chance to prove themselves Fri- day, Sept. 25, at McKay High School. “It’s not good enough to just beat them. Putting up a big score would really show what we’re able to do and the type of team we are,” said Celt Kyle Aicher. McNary (2-1 overall, 2-0 in the Greater Valley Confer- ence) faces a struggling Royal Scot team just getting over its third consecutive loss. It might be tempting to overlook the Salem team, but Celt Jon An- derson wanted McNary to step back and take it a game at a time. “I want us to come out and not underestimate McKay. We have to take it seriously and hit them hard every single play,” Anderson said. Three games into the season, McNary is becoming known as a running team despite having lots of options in the air. “Our receivers can get a little more open on the out- side and Trent (Van Cleave) can get the ball to us if we can get open,” Aicher said. Van Cleave completed 16 of 29 last week for 183 yards with no interceptions and one touchdown. Brendan Van Voor- his led the receivers with four catches for 64 yards, but Brady Sparks, Aicher, Matt Aguilar, Brodie Nepstad and Tanner Gordon all made contributions. On the ground, Van Cleave pounded out 127 yards on 20 carries and Sparks piled up 105 yards on 25 carries. “I’d like to see us put the pressure on, keep the pres- sure on and take another step forward this week,” said Jeff Auvinen, McNary head coach. “We need to come together as a group and have everyone making the best play they can to the best of their ability.” Last week, McKay lost to North Salem High School 22- 7. The Royal Scots were fi rst to the board with a touchdown in the fi rst quarter, but the Vikings began unloading beginning in the third quarter. McKay had 123 yards on the ground and 19 by air for the game. Gordon said the Celtics were still building last week, and that the progression will continue. “We built off the loss to Westview and we’ll build off the win over West Albany,” he said.
