Bulldogs leash
Celts on court
By ERIC A. HOWALD
Of the Keizertimes
The scores alone (25-21,
25-22 and 25-22) made the
McNary High School varsity
volleyball loss to West Albany
High School a heartbreaker.
The only thing that makes
it ache that much more for the
Lady Celts is knowing how
close they were to beating the
Bulldog team.
“We would have a lead the
whole entire game and then we
would just drop once we got to
20 points,” said McNary senior
Vanessa Hayes.
The Bulldogs, in their sec-
ond year returning to OSAA
6A ranks, seem determined to
remain a thorn in the side of
the Celtics. West Albany is the
only Greater Valley Conference
team the McNary didn’t beat at
least once in 2014.
“I feel like we kind of beat
ourselves. We had some errors
and they just didn’t make many
mistakes. Our energy wasn’t
where it normally is,” said Madi
Hingston, a Celtic senior.
Hayes also attributed the
team’s fi rst league loss to a lack
of communication during the
match Thursday, Sept. 10.
The better news for Mc-
Nary was that the loss was only
one of three contests last week
and the Lady Celts won the
other two, in a double-header
no less.
“There was a big difference
in focus in the matches against
McMinnville and West Salem
(high schools),” Hingston said.
Those matches were played
Tuesday, Sept. 8. McNary han-
dled the Grizzlies with ease
after some back-and-forth in
the beginning of the fi rst set.
The Lady Celts went on to win
with scores of 25-15, 25-16 and
25-15.
Hayes had 12 kills, six blocks
and nine digs, Hingston had
nine kills and 10 digs. Kylie
Gilmour had 15 digs and had a
2.4 passing average.
With that win in the can,
Hayes said the team hit the
court pumped for the Titans.
“We were the most excited
we have ever been. We had
great connection and we stuck
together by celebrating every
point like it was the last one,”
Hayes said.
It took four sets, but Mc-
Nary won with scores of 20-25,
27-25, 25-22 and 25-20. Hayes
had 21 kills, two blocks, and 11
digs; Hingston had nine kills,
17 digs, and passed a 2.46 av-
erage; Sydney Hunter had nine
kills; and Jaylene Montano and
Gilmour both added 13 digs.
“For they night Vanessa
played well, and Kaelie Flores
did a great job at the net for
us. Maddie Cloyd ran the
court well, and Jaylene and
Kylie played some of the best
defense we have seen out of
them yet. Sydney Hunter did
a great job coming off or her
leg injury – she is almost back
to full form,” said Kellie Scholl,
McNary head coach.
Hingston said the team had
all the skills to bounce back
despite the tough loss to West
Albany.
“Our offense has been pretty
strong and well-balanced. Our
defense is improving lately and
we’ve thrown in a new system
and that’s been working well
for us,” Hingston said.

Wildcats deal Celts fi rst loss

McNary’s Gage Mance just overshoots a tackle in the game
with Westview High School Friday, Sept. 11.

Of the Keizertimes
The McNary High School
varsity football team suffered
its fi rst loss of the season to
Westview High School Friday,
Sept. 11.
Throughout the night, Mc-
Nary had trouble defending its
offense and protecting the line
of scrimmage in a 36-14 loss to
the Wildcats.
“I thought the interior on
defense did well, but the sec-
ondary struggled. We ended up
shooting ourselves in the foot
a lot,” said senior Bobby Botta.
Junior wide receiver Brodie
Nepstad, who was a favorite
target of quarterback Trent Van
Cleave during the evening, said
it wasn’t a matter of bad play
calling, just execution.
“We had the spots, but
didn’t make the tackles and
bring people down quick,” he
said.
Westview started the game
with possession, but their
drive ended with a failed fi eld
goal attempt after Celts Brady
Sparks and Tanner Gordon
broke up a touchdown pass.
While many of the Celts
had rough patches in the game,
Head Coach Jeff Auvinen sin-
gled out Gordon for his com-
plete game effort.
“Tanner battled defensively
and got through on a lot of
their screen attempts. Soon
enough, those passes stopped
coming to his side. He is a
gutsy, gutsy kid and had a really
good game,” Auvinen said.
McNary’s fi rst drive ended
with a fumble that the Wildcats
recovered at McNary’s own
24-yard line. Within a handful
of plays, Westview found the
end zone and went up 7-0.
The Celtics pounded back
up the fi eld on the ground
with Van Cleave and Sparks
sharing running duties. Sparks
ended the drive on a 32-yard
touchdown run and Van Cleave
ran in the two-point conver-
sion to take an 8-7 lead. It was,
unfortunately, the last time
McNary would have control of
the game and it didn’t last long.

Lady Celts 2-0 on pitch
By ERIC A. HOWALD
Of the Keizertimes
After a later start than
many of their peers on oth-
er teams, the McNary High
School girls varsity soccer
team has a record of 2-0.
The Lady Celts took their
fi rst win, 5-0, off Benson High
School Tuesday, Sept. 8, and
notched the second Thurs-
day, Sept. 10 in a home game
vs. the Dallas High School
Dragons. McNary beat Dal-
las 3-1 in a game that saw the
team debut a new formation
designed for “controlling the
midfi eld and creating consis-
tent scoring opportunities,”
said AJ Nash, McNary head
coach.
“Our goalie (Syndey
Snapp) helped us a lot by tell-
ing us where to be from the
back and the whole team did
a good job of communicat-
ing,” said Gina Manguia, a
McNary freshman.
Dallas took a 1-0 lead be-
fore the half, but McNary had
numerous shots on goal that
went just wide of the mark.
In the second half, Mi-
chaela Sanchez slotted a one-
touch shot in the lower left
corner in the 55th minute to
level up the game, assisted by
Kolbie Kopp. Eight minutes
later, Munguia released Janie
Jarmin on a breakaway with
a pass up the middle that Jar-
min fi nished with good tech-
nique.
In the 76th minute, Jenna
Candland powered a shot
from outside the box into the
left side of the goal to give the
Celtics some breathing room.
Cadland’s goal was a double
assist on a short corner from
Kelli Miller and Jarmin.
“Passing is our big thing
right now. We have to be able
to move and give good pass-
es,” said Jarmin. “We’ve had
some good runs, but they’ve
mostly been straight ahead.
We need to work on coming
from the outside in.”
She added that the Drag-
ons left a lot of open room on
the fi eld and it played into the
Celtics strengths.
Manguia said the Dallas
game was a large step up from
the game with Benson even
though the Celtics scored
more frequently in the prior
game.
“When we played the
Dragons, we went up to their
level,” she said.

For the Keizertimes
Hillsboro took 13 innings
to end the Volcanoes’ season
Wednesday, Sept. 9, winning
6-5 in the rubber game of
the Northern Division series
to advance to the Northwest
League championship series
with Tri-City.
Salem-Keizer led through
fi ve innings, with starting
pitcher Logan Webb looking
as if he would have his best
performance of the season and
the Volcanoes scoring once in
each of the fi rst three innings.
Then the Hops scored twice
in the fourth and twice more
in the fi fth to lead by one.
The Volcanoes went ahead
by a run in the top of the
ninth on home runs by Ron-
nie Jebavy and Chris Shaw.
Hillsboro tied the score in the
bottom of the ninth, and the
next score came in the home
half of the 13th, when a bas-
es-loaded single by Dansby
Swanson drove Nate Robert-
son home.
In the Salem-Keizer fi rst,
Steven Duggar hit an infi eld
single, went to third on Miguel
Gomez’s single to center fi eld
and scored on a sacrifi ce fl y by
Shaw.
Dillon Dobson doubled to
lead off the second and moved
to third on a sacrifi ce bunt by
Junior Amion. He scored on a
ground out by Jebavy.
In the third, Gomez led off
with a home run over the right
fi eld fence. Starting pitcher
Tyler Bolton then struck out
Shaw but gave up a double
to Jose Vizcaino Jr. Cameron
Gann relieved Bolton and re-
tired the side.
Webb ran into trouble in
the fi fth, with Alex Olmeda
doubling to right, reaching
third on a fi elder’s choice and
scoring on Sergio Alcantara’s
single to center. Alcantara
went to second on an outfi eld
throw and scored as Swanson
singled to right.
Webb left the game after
fi ve innings, having allowed
fi ve hits but striking out six
with no walks. Cory Taylor,
who started the sixth, lasted
only two-thirds of an inning.
Trevor Mitsui, who led off,
struck out but reached fi rst
on a wild pitch. He advanced
to second and third on singles
by Luis Veras and Olmeda and
scored during a double play.
Veras went to third on the
double play and scored on a
wild pitch. After Taylor walked
the next two batters, Heath
Slatton replaced him and re-
tired the next batter.
In the seventh and eighth
innings,
Hillsboro
went
through Taylor Clarke and
Alex Young on the mound,
and Salem-Keizer replaced
Slatton with Caleb Smith.
After the two-run top of
the ninth, Ryan Halstead re-
lieved Smith. Swanson walked,
went to third on a double by
Grant Heyman and scored on
an infi eld single by Mitsui.
Brody Greer pitched the
10th, 11th and 12th innings
for the Hops, and Breckin
Williams pitched the 13th
to get the victory. Nathanael
Santiago, the losing pitcher,
took the mound in the 11th.
In the Hillsboro 13th, Nate
Robertson reached fi rst and
second on a throwing error
by Dobson at third base. He
went to third on an error by
second baseman Junior Amion
and scored as Swanson singled
to center.
