Haggen fi les for bankruptcy
By CRAIG MURPHY
Of the Keizertimes
It’s been a busy year for
Washington-based
grocer
Haggen.
Leaders with the grocery
chain started the year with
aggressive plans to expand
from 18 to 164 stores, tak-
ing advantage of stores being
spun off as a result of a merger
between Albertsons and Safe-
way.
As previously mentioned,
those plans unraveled in
August as the company an-
nounced 27 stores were be-
ing closed, including the one
on River Road in Keizer, by
mid-October.
That led to Haggen and
Albertsons suing each other.
The next step happened last
week as Haggen fi led for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy with
the U.S. Bankruptcy Court
for the District of Delaware.
“After careful consider-
ation of all alternatives, the
company concluded that a
reorganization through the
Chapter 11 process is the
best way for Haggen to pre-
serve value for all stakehold-
ers,” said John Clougher, chief
executive offi cer of Haggen.
“The action we are taking to-
day will allow us to continue
to serve our customers and
communities while provid-
ing Haggen with a process to
re-align our operations to be
positioned for the future.”
The pending closure of
the Keizer Haggen will leave
the city with just one grocery
store, the Safeway located at
4990 River Road North. It
would also leave Keizer with
yet another vacant space on
its main thoroughfare, joining
the former Roth’s building,
among others.
News announced last De-
cember of Haggen’s sudden
growth was surprising at the
time, since going from being
a relatively small Washington
and Oregon chain and add-
ing 146 stores in fi ve states
seemed to be a large un-
dertaking. Haggen’s lawsuit
against Albertsons, fi led late
last month, lays the blame at
the feet of that company.
“The associated conver-
sion process of the stores
made Albertsons’ cooperation
and good faith implementa-
tion of the terms of the deal
in the Asset Purchase Agree-
ment essential,” a statement
from Haggen last week read
in part.
Haggen leaders announced
last week the company had
received commitments for up
to $215 million in debtor-
in-possession fi nancing from
existing lenders to maintain
operations and the fl ow of
merchandise to its stores dur-
ing the sale process.
The company made mo-
tions with the court to sup-
port the continuation of its
day-to-day operations for
employees and others during
the restructuring. It is seeking
court approval to continue
employee wages and certain
benefi ts and honor certain
customer programs.
Sagent Advisors has been
tasked with marketing for
sale some locations in the fi ve
states it operates and to ex-
plore market interest for vari-
ous store locations, though
it was not announced if the
Keizer location is part of that
process. Discussions are un-
derway with interested parties
to sell many of the company’s
remaining assets.
