Volcanoes take series win over Hawks
By HERB SWETT
For the Keizertimes
It was a better week for the
Volcanoes than the previous
one, with a split of the last two
games with Everett and a series
win over Boise.
Aug. 26: Volcanoes 3,
Everett 2 (10 innings)
This win evened the Volca-
noes’ road series at 2-2.
It was a 1-0 Salem-Keizer
game until the ninth inning,
when Chris Shaw made it 2-0
with his eighth home run of
the season. Then Everett tied it
in the bottom of the ninth, but
the Volcanoes scored the fi nal
run in the 10th.
The fi rst Volcano run came
in the third, when a double by
Shilo McCall drove in Junior
Amion, who had also doubled.
Starting pitcher Grant Wat-
son was removed after 3-1/3
innings, when the bases were
full of AquaSox players, but
Eric Sim came in and retired
the side.
Caleb Smith took the

mound for the Volcanoes in
the ninth, and Corey Simpson
singled home Alex Jackson and
Luis Liberato to tie the score. In
the Salem-Keizer 10th, Ron-
nie Jebavy doubled and stole
third base, and Steven Duggar
singled him home. Smith set
down the AquaSox in order in
the bottom of the inning to get
his third win against two losses.
Matt Clancy was the losing
pitcher at 1-4.

Salem-Keizer bats woke up
in the seventh inning and add-
ed a run in the eighth, but it
wasn’t enough.
Three of the AquaSox’s runs
came in a fi rst-inning rally, and
a home run by Yordi Calderon
in the fourth provided the last
Everett run.
Enyel De Los Santos, Ever-
ett’s starting and winning pitch-
er at 3-0, held the Volcanoes to
two runs in his seven innings
and had six strikeouts. Joseph
Pistorese got his second save of
the season.
In the Volcano seventh, Ste-
ven Duggar singled and came

home on Chris Shaw’s ninth
homer of the season. In the
eighth, Ashford Fulmer was hit
by a pitch, went to second on
a Christian Lichtenthaler single,
tagged and reached third on a
fl y, and scored on a single by
Duggar.
Volcano starter Logan Webb
was the losing pitcher at 3-5.
Aug. 28: Boise 5,
Volcanoes 0
Great Boise pitching and
weak Salem-Keizer hitting
brought about this disappoint-
ing start to a home series.
The Volcanoes had only fi ve
hits, the only one for extra bas-
es a double by Miguel Gomez,
Christian Lichtenthaler, a late
bloomer with the bat, had two
of the hits, raising his batting
average to .259.
Hawk starter Colin Wel-
mon went fi ve innings for the
win and a 2-4 record. Relievers
Matt Meyer and Craig Schlit-
ter each pitched two innings.
Luis Pino, the Volcanoes’ starter,
gave up all fi ve runs in his six
innings, but only two runs were
earned. His record ran to 3-1
with a 1.38 earned run average.
Boise was helped by an
error in the third inning by
third baseman Gomez and two
fourth-inning errors by short-
stop Lichtenthaler. The Hawks
made no errors.
Aug. 29: Volcanoes 2, Boise 0
The bats of Miguel Gomez
and John Riley and the arms
of Drew Leenhouts and Ryan
Halstead evened the series with
the Hawks.
Both runs came in the
fourth inning. Gomez led off
with his sixth of the season,
Boise starter Jack Wynkoop re-
tired the next two batters, and
Riley hit his fi fth homer.
Boise threatened several
times, with baserunners reach-
ing third base in the second,
fi fth and eighth innings.
Leenhouts pitched 7-2/3
innings, allowing six hits but
only one walk and striking out
fi ve. He won his seventh game
against four losses. Halstead
pitched the rest of the way, with
two strikeouts, and had his sixth
save. Wynkoop’s record went to
2-4.
Aug. 30: Volcanoes 4,
Boise 2
Ronnie Jebavy had three
singles and three stolen bases
and drove in two runs to lead
Salem-Keizer to a 2-1 edge in
the series.
The Volcanoes scored twice
in the fi rst inning and twice
in the seventh. In the fi rst, Je-
bavy singled, stole second base,
reached third on a passed ball
and scored on a double by Ste-
ven Duggar. Duggar stole third,
and Miguel Gomez singled him
home.
In the seventh, Ashford Ful-
mer and Christian Lichtenthaler
hit two-out singles. A throwing
error by third baseman Kevin
Padlo advanced both runners,
and Jebavy singled them home.
The Hawks scored a run in
the fi rst on two doubles and
one in the seventh on three
singles.
Nolan Riggs, the fi rst Vol-
cano pitcher, struck out four in
fi ve innings. Eric Sim followed
with his third hold of the sea-
son. David Owen became the
winning pitcher despite pitch-
ing only two-thirds of an in-
ning. Caleb Smith got his sev-
enth save. All four left the game
with earned run averages below
three. Dylan Thompson was the
losing pitcher in relief.
we have to keep going.”
On the North Salem side
of the game, the Vikings are
expected to rely quite a bit
on Giovanni Gonzalez, who
rushed for more than 600 yards
and eight touchdowns as a
sophomore.
However, word on the street
was that the Viking team was
throwing the ball a bit more in
the preseason than they have in
the past. Regardless, Auvinen
had faith in his Celtics.
“If everybody does their as-
signment, I’m excited about
Coach (KJ) McCrae’s game-
plan and I think our guys will
do just fi ne with North’s offen-
sive schemes,” he said.
