“The new offense has been built
around us and that feels really good. It
feels like something everyone can handle
and be part of,” Sader said. “If there’s one
thing I want to see us improve it’s taking
the time outside of practice to learn plays.
We can run 20 plays and only run one
right and it doesn’t do anything for us, but
if we run 10 plays perfectly we’re in the
end zone.”
Auvinen, of course, has goals he’d like
to see the team work toward.
“Offensively, we’d like to go 50/50
with the run and pass, but everybody
always says that. We’d like to keep close
to that ratio to keep opponents off bal-
ance more than we were able to last year,”
Auvinen said.
Receiving duties are likely to be han-
dled by Kyle Aguilar, Kyle Aicher, Gage
Mance and Brendan Van Voorhis, one of
the top sprinters in the state.
“Brendan can run like the wind and
he’s not just a track guy playing football,
he’s got good game skills,” Auvinen said.
On defense, handled by new defensive
coach KJ McCrae, Auvinen said the team
will try to be less blitz-heavy with a four-
man front rather than three. Senior Lac-
roix Hill, who is injury-free for the fi rst
time in a while, will likely be the point-
man as defensive end and defensive tackle.
“I like our defense this season, they’re
tough and fl ying around and physical,”
Hill said. “It’s not going to be easier this
season, but we have a good connection
and I hope we can dominate.”
Auvinen said the Celt defense sur-
prised their offense in early scrimmages.
“You could tell that they were play-
ing at a different tempo and the offense
had to take a step back and reassess. The
challenge for the offense is to match the
defense now,” Auvinen said.
Per usual, putting it all together will
be the biggest challenge for the team, but
Sperle thought the Celtics were up to the
task.
“We need to play with tenacity non-
stop. We’ve taken plays off in the past and
we need to stay fl uid through the whole
game,” he said.
