Netters seek out new heights
By ERIC A. HOWALD
In 2014, the McNary High School var-
sity volleyball team was in the enviable po-
sition of being the dark horse.
The Lady Celts fi nished the season with
a 13-3 record, and the only Greater Valley
Conference team it didn’t beat at least once
was West Albany High School. After fi n-
ishing second in the league, McNary pro-
gressed all the way to the state’s Elite 8 in
the playoffs and the team is returning many
from that roster.
“We’re talking a lot about teams gunning
for us, but I think some teams are still over-
looking us and thinking it was a one-time,
great season,” said Kellie Scholl, McNary
head coach.
“We’ve been working hard the past three
weeks with the same high expectations,”
added senior Kaelie Flores. “The younger
girls we have on the team are also working
hard to carry forward the goals we accom-
plished last year.”
Kylie Gilmour, Madi Cloyd, Madi
Hingston, Reina Strand and Vanessa Hayes
round out the team’s returning seniors.
One thing the team has working in its
favor this year, and for the fi rst time in quite
a while, is its height. Five members of the
team top out at 6-foot or taller, another
three are 5-foot-10 or better.
