AUGUST 28, 2015, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A9 Volcanoes struggle for consistency By HERB SWETT For the Keizertimes The Volcanoes got into something of a slump, going 3-4 (see separate story page 10) in the last seven days before press time. Aug. 19: Volcanoes 10, Hillsboro 7 It was Ronnie Jebavy’s big night as Salem-Keizer kept the visiting Hops from a series sweep. The game was tight, but nobody could shut down Je- bavy. The Volcanoes’ center fi elder hit two home runs and a triple in four times at bat, driving in four runs from the leadoff spot, scoring three and making several outstanding defensive plays. It was the fi rst time this season for a Volcano to homer more than once in a game. Hillsboro started off with three runs in the fi rst inning, all on the fi rst of two home runs by Trevor Mitsui. The Volcanoes scored once in the fi rst, when Jebavy scored on a ground out, and once in the second, when Jebavy’s triple drove in Junior Amion, who had doubled. Salem-Keizer added two runs in the fi fth, on a bases- empty homer by Chris Shaw and a single by Julio Pena that brought Jose Vizcaino Jr. home. The Volcanoes were up by a run and never lost their lead. Eric Sim was the winning pitcher at 1-1, in relief of Na- thanael Santiago. Ryan Hal- stead got his fi fth save. Hills- boro starter Carlos Hernandez was the losing pitcher. Aug. 20: Eugene 12, Volcanoes 5 The visiting Emeralds led all the way and made things rough in the fi fth and sixth innings. Grant Watson, recently promoted from the Arizona Instructional League, started for Salem-Keizer, and the Vol- canoes trailed only 3-2 in the fourth inning, when he was removed because of a pitch count. In the next two in- nings, Rayan Hernandez and Armando Paniagua got ham- mered. The Volcanoes had eight hits, including Miguel Go- mez’s fi fth home run of the season. Gomez, Steven Dug- gar and Jose Vizcaino had two hits each. Eugene had 14 hits, one a two-run homer by Eloy Jimenez. Watson was the losing pitcher with an 0-1 record. Emerald starter Oscar De La Cruz was the winner at 5-3. The best thing for Volcano fans may have been the atten- dance of 3,110. Aug. 21: Eugene 7, Volcanoes 6 The Emeralds achieved a series win by doing every- thing better than the Vol- canoes, except that Volcano pitchers had more strikeouts and each club made two er- rors. Salem-Keizer led for a while, scoring two runs in the fourth inning for a 4-3 lead, but Eugene tied the score in the fi fth and went ahead for good in the sixth. The visitors outhit the Volcanoes 13-7, but Salem- Keizer’s John Riley hit the only home run of the game. It was his third of the season and came in the third with Miguel Gomez on base. Andrew Ely had four hits for the Emeralds and Donnie Dewees three. Adbert Alzolay was the winning pitcher in relief at 4-2, and Scott Effross had his second save. David Owen was the loser in relief. Volcano starter Logan Webb had fi ve strikeouts, as did closer Cory Taylor. Aug. 23: Everett 7, Volcanoes 2 Salem-Keizer never led in the opener of this fi ve-game road series. The AquaSox outhit the Volcanoes only 9-6 but had six extra-base hits to their visitors’ three. Everett started the scor- ing in the second inning with two runs, which came on a two-run home run by Ryan Ask Mr. Trash Q. How do I keep my trash from blowing in the wind? ©1986 A. Bagging loose trash and closing the cart lid will help prevent wind related issues, keep pets and crows from spreading the waste, and will even help with cart cleanliness. It’s also a good idea to roll shredded paper up into a paper sack before placing it in your blue cart for recycling. Please help us keep your neighborhood clean! KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. Howald Volcano Ronnie Jebavy slides into second just ahead of a throw from home plate in the game Friday, Aug. 21. Uhl. Two more AquaSox runs came in the fourth, and that was all for Drew Leenhouts, whose record fell to 6-4 al- though he left with a 2.89 earned run average. Rayan Hernandez pitched the next two innings and gave up three runs, but only one was earned, because of his own throwing error in the fi fth. The Volcanoes scored in the eighth when Junior Amion, who had walked and moved to third base on a double by Steven Duggar, went home on a ground out. Their other run was a homer by John Riley in the ninth. Rohn Pierce was the win- ning pitcher in relief with a 4-0 record. Aug. 24: Volcanoes 4, Everett 3 The Volcanoes evened the series, scoring all four of their runs in the second inning. Steven Duggar was the star, with two singles and a double in three times at bat and two runs batted in. In the Salem-Keizer sec- ond, Fernando Pujadas sin- gled, Junior Amion walked and Christian Lichtenthaler singled, loading the bases. Ashford Fulmer walked, forc- ing Pujadas home. Ronnie Jebavy singled Amion home. Duggar doubled, driving in Lichtenthaler and Fulmer. Everett’s runs came in the fi rst, third and fi fth innings. Drew Jackson of the Aqua- Sox stole his 41st base of the season and scored the fi rst- inning run. Starter Nolan Riggs was the winning pitcher with a 4-2 record. Ryan Halstead had his fi fth save. Everett starter Luiz Gohara took the loss, running his record to No Job Too Big or Too Small • Additions & Repairs • Dry Rot Repairs • Flooring & Countertops • Roofi ng & Siding • Kitchens & Baths • Doors & Windows • Decks & Fences • Patio & Deck Covers 3-5. Aug. 25: Volcanoes 1, Everett 4 Salem-Keizer never led in this game, which was a one- hitter through six innings. Jacob Brentz, the AquaSox starter, went six innings, al- lowing only a single to Chris- tian Lichtenthaler and two walks, striking out fi ve for his fi rst win with no losses. Everett scored once in the second inning and once in the fourth. The Volcanoes cut the lead to one run in the seventh when Junior Amion, who had singled, reached second on an error and third on a ground out, scored on a wild pitch by reliever Joey Strain. The AquaSox added a run in the seventh on a home run by Alex Jackson and one in the eighth on a walk, a bunt, a grounder and a single. Kyle Wilcox was Ever- ett’s closer with his eighth save. Mike Connolly, who started for the Volcanoes, al- lowed eight hits but struck out six in his fi ve innings and is now 4-2. KEIZER CLASSIFIEDS Serving Keizer for Nearly 50 years!
