S-K takes win in bottom of 10th
In the Volcano ninth, Go-
mez hit a one-out single
to left and went to third as
Shaw singled to left. Ashford
Fulmer, a newcomer up from
the Arizona Instructional
League, ran for Shaw. Pujadas
singled to left, driving in Go-
mez, and Brad Moss went in
to run for him. John Riley
walked, and Greyfer Eregua
came in to pitch. Amion
hit into a force out, scoring
Fulmer, and Moss went to
third. Amion stole second,
and Mark Nelson, hitting for
Pina, reached second on an
error by second baseman De
La Rosa. Riley scored on the
play, and the score was 5-5.
After Smith held the Em-
eralds scoreless in the 10th,
Duggar walked and reached
third on a single to left by
Gomez. Scott Price, who had
replaced Shaw at fi rst base,
brought Duggar home with
a bunt single.
Smith ran his record to
2-2, and Eregua’s went to
0-3.
“I wish we’d made it a lit-
tle easier than that,” manager
Kyle Haines said of his Volca-
noes, but he called the win “a
very good effort by multiple
players.”
Lichtenthaler, an offensive
force for the fi rst time this
season, was asked what he
had been doing to improve
his hitting.
“I’ve worked on it harder
every single day,” he said.
Price, not known for bun-
ting, said, “I was surprised
when I got the sign, but we
bunt in practice every day.”

Volcano Christian Lichtenthaler attempts to tag out a runner at second base in the game Friday,
Aug. 21. Lichtenthaler had one of his best offensive games of the season Sunday, Aug. 23.
The Volcanoes edged
Eugene 6-5 in 10 innings
Sunday, Aug. 23, at home to
avoid a series sweep.
After trailing from the
start through two outs in the
bottom of the ninth inning,
Salem-Keizer tied the score
and took one more inning to
keep its bats going.
The Emeralds took a 2-0
lead in the fi rst inning. Don-
nie Dewees hit an infi eld sin-
gle off Volcano starter Luis
Pino and went to second
base as Frandy De La Rosa
singled to right fi eld. Andrew
Ely walked to load the bases,
and Pino walked Andrew Ely
to force Dewees home. Al-
berto Mineo singled to right,
driving in De La Rosa.
Pino kept Eugene score-
less for the next two in-
nings, and the Volcanoes
scored their fi rst run in the
third. Christian Lichten-
thaler, who had played little
this season but was to have a
3-for-5 night, hit a one-out
single to center. Ronnie Je-
bavy reached fi rst base on
an error by second baseman
De La Rosa, with Lichten-
thaler moving to second.
Steven Duggar grounded out
but Miguel Gomez walked
to load the bases. Emerald
starter Kyle Twomey walked
Chris Shaw, forcing in Lich-
tenthaler. Preston Morrison
relieved Twomey and struck
out Fernando Pujadas to re-
tire the side.
Eugene widened the lead
to 3-1 in the fourth. Alex
Bautista walked and went to
third on a hit-and-run single
to right center by PJ Higgins.
Dewees hit into a force out
that allowed Bautista to score.
In the Volcano fourth, Ju-
nior Amion singled to right
and went to third on a wild
pitch. Lichtenthaler hit an
infi eld single, driving him in.
There was no more scor-
ing until the ninth, but Sa-
lem-Keizer threatened in the
sixth. Pedro Araujo replaced
Morrison on the mound and
loaded the bases with singles
from Julio Pena, Lichtenthal-
er and Jebavy. Then he retired
the next three batters.
Eric Sim followed Pino
to the mound in the sev-
enth inning and walked two
Emeralds in the sixth, but a
one-out double play, short-
stop Lichtenthaler to second
baseman Amion to fi rst base-
man Shaw, followed. Ryan
Halstead pitched the eighth
and retired the side in order.
Caleb Smith pitched the
ninth for Salem-Keizer and
allowed two runs. Dewees
hit a bunt single, and De La
Rosa reached fi rst on a force
out. Eloy Jimenez hit an in-
fi eld single, and Ian Rice
doubled to left, scoring De
La Rosa and Jimenez.
Class lists will be posted inside the school.
Students may bring school supplies to the open
house. Each school/teacher may have differ-
ent needs or requests for supplies. The fi rst day
of school is Wednesday, Sept. 9, for grades 1
through 5 and Monday, Sept. 14, for kinder-
