Parks tour to get new stops
By CRAIG MURPHY

There wasn’t much ques-
tion Keizer Rapids Park would
once again be part of the tour.
The question for members
of the Keizer Parks and Recre-
ation Advisory Board on Tues-
day evening was which other
parks should make up the an-
nual Parks Tour.
The Parks Tour, in which
Parks Board members show
several parks to members of
the Keizer City Council, will
take place on Monday, Sept.
14 starting at 5:45 p.m. The
Parks Tour will be preceded by
a brief Parks Board meeting,
which will take place of the
regularly scheduled meeting
on Sept. 8.
After much discussion
Keizer Little League Park, a
mainstay on the tour for years,
was taken off the list. Parks
Board members added Mead-
ows, Bob Newton and North-
view Parks to the list.
Having KRP on the tour
was an automatic.
“There’s so much going
on around Keizer Rapid Park.
There’s the amphitheater and
stuff around the volleyball
courts. There’s a lot to see
around there,” said Clint Hol-
land.
J.T. Hager, the newest
member of the Parks Board,
asked what the stated purpose
of the tour is.
“For me, we’d want to show
council what we’ve done that
is good and also areas where
they need to cough up more
bucks,” Hager said. “When the
council’s there, make it count.
We can say look at what we
did, then let’s hit a couple of
problematic ones.”
Richard Walsh agreed with
the idea.
“J.T. is right, let’s take coun-

cil to places we want to ask for
money,” Walsh said.
Holland made an initial
motion for the tour to include
KRP, KLL, Northridge and
Palma Ciea Parks.
Robert Johnson, the Keizer
Parks supervisor now attend-
ing the meetings in place of
Bill Lawyer, suggested remov-
ing Northridge Park from the
list.
“Meadows Park could use
a new play structure soon,”
Johnson said. “Keizer Rapids
is always a good one to visit.
There are a million things to
look at in terms of future de-
velopment and development
done this year.”
Johnson also noted the
tennis courts at Bob Newton
Park need to be resurfaced
“sooner rather than later” and
suggested the basketball courts
at Northview Park could use
some repairs.
William Criteser suggested
removing Palma Ciea Park
from the list, which no one
protested.
Holland wanted to keep
KLL Park on the list so coun-
cilors could see how the fields
look this year compared to
last year, when councilors ex-
pressed dismay at the condi-
tion of the park. Hager sug-
gested having a fact sheet
prepared about the park, but
not including it on the tour.
“I don’t want to waste our
time unless we can show the
council something and then
ask for something,” Hager said.
“Clint, it would be wise to
have something on Keizer Lit-
tle League but not taking the
time to visit. Councilors are
smart; they know the problems
that are there.”
City staff will decide on the
order of the parks. It was not
determined if a van will be
rented or if carpooling will be
done.

After a little bit of a delay, Jerry Nuttbrock and crews from Salem Concrete Service and
Salem Mobile Mix poured the concrete for the amphitheater patio project at Keizer Rap-
ids Park on Tuesday, Aug. 11. Nuttbrock got some help from the Keizer Parks and Recre-
ation Advisory Board’s matching grant program. Northwest Rock Inc. also contributed
to the project.

Work has been progressing this week on the extension of McLeod Avenue by Chemawa Road
in Area C of Keizer Station, where new apartments and a senior retirement facility will soon be
built. Before the buildings can be constructed, McLeod Avenue has to be extended. The road
currently ends at Chemawa Road, with the new section of the road continuing to the east. This
