ERRORS: S-K struggles to
string wins on road
(Continued from Page 10)
Peter Van Gansen’s sacrifi ce
bunt moved Tidwell to third,
and Austin Allen doubled
Tidwell home.
All fi ve of the Dust Devils’
runs were unearned. Corey
Kimber was the winning
pitcher and Smith the loser.
Gomez and Shilo McCall
each had two hits for the
Volcanoes.
Monday:
Volcanoes 8, Tri-City 5
Salem-Keizer came from
behind, went ahead in the
seventh inning and added
three insurance runs to take a
2-1 lead in the series.
This time the Volcanoes had
15 hits including three home
runs and played errorless ball.
Shilo McCall hit his fourth
homer of the season with John
Riley on base in the seventh,
CJ Hinojosa hit the fi rst of
his professional career in the
eighth and Chris Shaw hit a
solo shot in the ninth.
As in the previous night’s
game, the last Volcano pitcher
faced pressure in the ninth.
Ryan Halstead, however, got
tough after the fi rst two hitters
singled and McCall helped
him with two running catches
in left fi eld.
Halstead was the winning
pitcher. Louis Distasio was the
losing pitcher, also in relief.

Boise Hawks Wednesday, July 15.
The Dust Devils had one
home run, a two-run shot by
Carlos Belen in the third.
Tuesday:
Tri-City 15, Volcanoes 8
Volcano errors were not
the whole story of this one,
but they may have rattled the
Salem-Keizer players enough
for the Dust Devils to even
the series.
Tri-City led 3-2 after one
inning, but the Volcanoes
scored three times in the
fourth and once in the fi fth.
The Dust Devils tied the score
in the sixth and added three
runs in the seventh and four
in the eighth.
The Devils had 19 hits,
with each man in the lineup
getting at least one and Carlos
Belen hitting two home runs
and Mason Smith one. Jose
Vizcaino Jr. homered for the
Volcanoes in the fi fth.
New
pitcher
Charles
Owen, who had fl own into
Pasco just in time to suit up,
was the losing pitcher in
relief. Tri-City reliever Luis
Hernandez got his fi rst win
of the season. Four Dust
Devils had three hits each,
with Steven Duggar the only
Volcano with three.

Volcanoes take 1-0
win in pitchers’ duel
By HERB SWETT
For the Keizertimes
A 1-0 win opened the Vol-
canoes’ fi ve-game series in
Pasco, Wash., Saturday, July 18.
Pitchers Mike Connolly
and Cory Taylor combined
for the shutout. Connolly, the
winning pitcher, went six in-
nings and ran his record to
2-1 with a big drop in his
earned run average to 3.70.
Taylor pitched the remaining
three to get his fi rst save. Each
pitcher had seven strikeouts.
The lone Salem-Keizer
run came in the second in-
ning. Scott Price hit a two-
out single to left fi eld. After
he went to second base on a
wild pitch by Tri-City starter
Brett Kennedy, John Riley
brought him home with a
triple to left.
Kennedy, the loser, was re-
placed after 2-1/2 innings by
Griffi n Russell, who pitched
through the fi fth. Elvin Liria-
no and Wilson Santos fol-
lowed, each pitching two in-
nings.
It was not quite a game of
silenced bats. The Volcanoes
and Dust Devils each had
eight hits.
There were a few scoring
threats. With one out in the
top of the third, Ronnie De-
bavy struck out but reached
fi rst when Dust Devils
catcherAustin Allen chased a
dropped third strike. Debavy
stole second for his eighth
steal of the season. Steven
Duggar walked, but Jose Viz-
caino Jr. struck out to end the
Volcano third.
In the Tri-City fi fth, Nick
Vilter hit a one-out in-
fi eld single and stole second.
He went to third as Kodie
Tidwell grounded out, but

the next batter, Rod Boykin,
struck out to end the inning.
The Dust Devils had the
last chance in the ninth, with
Allen hitting a one-out sin-
gle to center. Mason Smith
pinch-ran for Allen but ad-
vanced only to second when
Ty France singled to center.
Taylor struck out the next
two batters, and the Volcanoes
had their win.
“We’ve had a few good
pitching performances,” Sa-
lem-Keizer manager Kyle
Haines observed. “We needed
it today.”
Haines added that Taylor
“has really competed every
time we’ve given him the
ball.”
Asked how he had been
improving his pitching, Con-
nolly gave credit to pitching
coach Matt Yourkin.
“He has me make myself
as tired as possible,” Connolly
said of his workouts, “so I’m
ready at game time.
Taylor, asked how he had
been succeeding as a reliever,
said he had been focusing on
“off-speed command and lo-
cating the fast ball.”
