PAGE A12, KEIZERTIMES, JULY 10, 2015 HOMES, continued from Page A1 “It’s because the hous- ing market has heated back up,” Brown said. “Keizer is a desirable place to build. It’s a favorable climate, since our SDCs (System Development Charges) are lower. Our SDCs are $3,000 and change, while Salem is $13,000 and change. But I suspect they’ve also had a bump. It’s not just because of the cheap price.” According to data from the City of Keizer, there were 62 single family residential units applied for in the fi rst half of 2015 in the city. Of those, 31 were submit- ted by I&E Construction for new lots in Windsor Island Estates on Lydia Avenue, plus one more on Willow Leaf Street. Eight were submitted by Pacifi c National Develop- ment for lots in Avalon Mead- ows on Harbour Lane, with three more for that develop- ment on Explorer Place and two more on Taurus Loop, for a total of 13. Quite the move... KEIZERTIMES/Craig Murphy KEIZERTIMES/Craig Murphy New homes have been going up quickly and continuously at the Windsor Island Estates subdivision in Keizer. There were also fi ve per- mits submitted for new homes in the Aldine Meadows subdi- vision on Aldine Drive. “It goes in fi ts and spurts,” Brown said of housing starts. “When we have something remarkable, that prompts me to say something.” That happened in mid- April during a long-range planning meeting, when Keizer City Councilor Bran- don Smith questioned a pro- jected housing growth of 1.5 percent, based on much lower growth in recent years. “To me that seems aggres- sive,” Smith said of projections. Brown responded from mid-March until that mid- April meeting alone there had been 27 single family home permits applied for. “We haven’t seen those number for a while,” Brown said at the meeting. “The economy is picking up. People are recognizing Keizer is very desirable.” Holiday card entries due Sept. 18 By CRAIG MURPHY Of the Keizertimes Don’t look now, but the holidays are getting closer. Actually, if you are thinking of entering the Keizer Pub- lic Art Commission’s holiday card contest, do look. That’s because entries are due on Sept. 18. Entries must be sub- mitted by 4 p.m. that Friday at the Keizer Civic Center, lo- cated at 930 Chemawa Road N. KPAC members will judge entries at their meeting the following week and select a winning entry. The artist with the winning entry will be no- tifi ed by Sept. 25. The win- ning artist will receive a $100 gift card to Michael’s Crafts. Keizer residents of all ages are eligible to submit artwork expressing the holiday season, though items tied to a specifi c religion such as Santa Claus, angels and menorahs “may be excluded,” according to the entry form. Each entry must be accom- panied by a signed entry form and must be at least 4 inches by 6 inches, but no more than 8 inches by 10 inches in size. The one-dimensional entries (for scanning and recreating purposes) can be a painting (acrylic, oil or watercolor), a drawing (pencil, charcoal or ink) or a photograph. An in- dividual can submit up to two entires. An artist’s signature must appear somewhere on the artwork. The art must be suitable for use as a holiday card and should depict a Keizer scene or an event with a holiday theme. Entry forms can be picked up at city hall or downloaded on the city’s newly revamped website at keizer.org. All entries will be displayed at the civic center from Nov. 23 to Jan. 8, 2016. All artwork must be picked up at the civic center between Jan. 8 and 31. The winning entrant must agree to allow their name to appear on the fi nished card, to transfer all copyrights to the city and to allow their name and reproduction of the win- ning entry to be published in the media. KPAC member Beth Me- lendy came up with the holi- day card idea last fall. The original idea was to have the contest last year, but it was de- cided to iron out the details and start the contest this year. The hope is for the contest to become an annual thing.
