Lady Celt catcher
Kansas-bound
By ERIC A. HOWALD
Of the Keizertimes
Lady Celt Kiana Villarreal is
taking a major leap of faith in
August.
Villarreal, a just-graduated
McNary High School alumna,
signed to play softball with
Kansas’ Seward County Com-
munity College last month,
and she’s never even seen the
place.
“We had a tournament in
Huntington Beach, Calif., and
I got recruited over there. A
couple of weeks later, I started
checking out their website and
seeing what it was like,” Villar-
real said.
She met with the Saints’
coach, Andrea Gustafson, dur-
ing Christmas break last De-
cember and said it was Gus-
tafson who convinced her it
would be a good fi t.
Villarreal’s McNary coach,
Kevin Wise, has nothing but
faith that Villarreal can do
whatever job she’s called upon
to do in Liberal, Kan.
“Kiana is one of the hard-
est workers I’ve ever been
around,” Wise said. “Being a
catcher, you get beat up. There
are some balls that I think I
would be down crying, and
she gets up and shakes it off.
She’s like steel.”
Wise said her work ethic
made her a role model on the
team the past two seasons.
“She’s the fi rst one on the
fi eld and last one to leave
whether she’s working on
skills or just picking stuff up,”
Wise said.
Work ethic aside, Villarreal
has the numbers to back her
up.
Prior to the Lady Celts
making it to the post season,
she batted .491 with seven
doubles and four home runs.
Behind the dish, Villarreal
started 12 games with one er-
ror and 59 putouts. She’ll play
catcher for the Saints as well.

Future Celt basketball
camp starts June 15
KEIZERTIMES/Eric A. Howald
McNary High School alumna Kiana Villarreal recently signed with Kansas-based Steward County
Community College to continue her softball career.
Villarreal said she’s look-
ing forward to playing at the
next level and comparing it to
to what she’s already experi-
enced, even if it means she’ll
have to do some new bond-
building.
“We’ve had such a close
team this season and it’s going
to be a very new experience
going into games not knowing
the other players as well. You
get used to having the same
faces around, but it should be
fun, too,” Villarreal said.
