KHT’s Patsy Cline still
showing at Keizer Lions
By ERIC A. HOWALD
Of the Keizertimes
In 1961, Louise Seger
showed up early for a Patsy
Cline show at Houston’s Es-
quire Ballroom.
Seger found in Cline’s
music a refl ection of her
own life as a divorced, single
mother and became some-
thing of a “superfan” in
current parlance. Seger met
Cline before the show and
the encounter set off a two-
year friendship kept alive
through phone calls and let-
ters until Cline’s death in a
plane crash in 1963.
The pair’s story is the basis
of the play Always … Patsy
Cline, Keizer Homegrown
Theatre’s latest production,
which opened with shows
Iris Festival weekend at the
Keizer Lions Club, 4100
Cherry Avenue N.E. The
run continues May 22, 23, 29
and 30 at the same site. Cur-
tain time is 7 p.m. each night.
Tickets to all shows are $12.
In some ways, the story of
the two lead actresses, Taylor
Pawley and Carolyn Ego-
Johnson, mimics the story of
the characters they play.
“Carolyn and I met when
we were doing I Love You
You’re Perfect, Now Change,
and we became inseparable,”
said Pawley.
“Our lives had so many
parallels, down to driving
the same car and working for
our family businesses,” Ego-
Johnson added.
Pawley takes on the role
of Cline, backed by a band

the opening night production of Keizer Homegrown Theatre’s
production of Always ... Patsy Cline.
of local musicians, and Ego-
Johnson plays Seger.
The pair have been “liv-
ing the show” since January
rehearsing on their own and
more recently with the full
band.
“I’ve done a ton of re-
search and she was the most
hard-working,
wonderful,
genuine person,” Pawley said.
“Everyone respected her, es-
pecially the men. They intro-
duced her as ‘Country Su-
perstar Patsy Cline.’”
Pawley is no stranger to
musical theatre, but there was
one small problem in por-
traying Cline.
“Patsy had a specifi c way
of performing and it was
not moving very much. It’s
been diffi cult to just stand
there and other people yell-
ing at me to keep my hands
at my side and stop moving
so much,” Pawley said.
For her part, Ego-Johnson
is making some changes to
her role.
“The way that Louise is
written is not the way her
family would have written
her in the show, and we are
trying to be true to the real
Louise Seger and honor her.
She was a beauty queen at
one point and would have
been a good old southern
woman,” Ego-Johnson said.
“The piece that took me
by surprise was how tough
Cline’s life was with a tough
marriage and kids. She was
struggling and was open with
Louise about it.”

Pets provide companionship and uncon-
ditional love for their owners, and no matter
what hardships people face, their pets are there
with them every step of the way.
We at Willamette Valley Animal Hospital
have seen the need for veterinary care for the
pets of the homeless here in Marion County,
and have taken action.
Teaming with the Petco South Salem, Petco
Keizer Station, Second Chance Salem Dog
Rescue, Hopes Haven, GoodFellas, Salem
Dogs, Pittie Pals and Fences for Fido, we are
raising the funds to vaccinate, deworm, provide
fl ea control, complete health exams and spay
or neuter all these pets!
Through charitable donations, we have
already provided pet food and blankets for
pets in great need. The demand is high and
we continue to collect donations of these
items and the money that’s needed to provide
medical necessities to those pets whose loving
owners have hit hard times.
On-site veterinary care is also being
provided! Scheduled events brings Dr. Mark
Stoenner, DVM, to areas more accessible
for the homeless to bring their pets for care.
You can contact our Community Outreach
Coordinator Juan Lopez for details on our next
event. Our phone number is 503-393-7462.
Sponsor one of these great pets online! Visit
www.wvah.net and check out our Paws for a
Cause section. We also take donations at our
clinic. Willamette Valley Animal Hospital is
located at 4975 River Road, next to Boucher
Jewelers, in Keizer.
