Bike passing laws hit home for traffi c committee
By CRAIG MURPHY
Of the Keizertimes
It was quite the appropri-
ate night to have the conver-
sation.
One of the topics brought
up during last month’s Keizer
Traffic/Bikeways/Pedestrian
Safety committee meeting
was new laws meant to give
more protection to bicyclists
along highways in Oregon.
The Vulnerable Roadway
Users and Safe Passing Dis-
tance laws were approved last
summer.
Hersch Sangster led the
discussion on the topic dur-
ing the bikeways meeting.
Committee member John
Henry Maurice was attend-
ing his first meeting since be-
ing hit by a vehicle on March
14. Maurice was riding his
bike near Antelope in Central
Oregon when a motorist hit
him, causing serious injuries.
Maurice continues to recu-
perate at his Keizer home.
“The Oregon Legislature
passed a law in July that when
passing a cyclist you need to
leave about three feet,” Sang-
ster said. “There has been
some confusion since it was
passed. Marion County has
indicated it’s been confusing
how to pick it out. One is-
sue that did come up is a lot
of cyclists are starting to use
videos on their bikes. There’s
good video of drivers passing
by real close.
“It the law, but it’s a new
law,” he added. “Some of our
streets aren’t that wide.”
Curt McCormack asked
what Sangster wanted the
committee to do.
“I want to bring awareness
that this is going on,” Sang-
ster said. “This is a new law
that not even cyclists know
about.”
Sangster noted the law was
one of several not followed in
Maurice’s accident.
“The driver that hit John
did not follow that law at all,”
Sangster said.
Maurice confirmed that
and gave an indication of
how close the drunk driver
was.
“I had a broken mirror,”
Maurice said.
In other business:
• Maurice entered the

council chambers using a
walker, as injuries from the
accident included a broken
left leg in addition to sever-
al broken ribs, a broken left
shoulder blade, a cut side on
the left side of his temple and
a concussion.
“I’m glad to be here,”
Maurice said.
• Sangster is the new chair
of the committee. McCor-
mack stepped down from
that role, but will stay on the
committee. Pat Fisher is the
new vice chair.
• The committee will now
meet on the second Thurs-
day of each month, instead
of the fourth Thursday. The
change went into effect this
month, meaning a meeting
was scheduled to be held
May 14.
