Of the Keizertimes
You may have heard about
the play structure for children
coming to Keizer Rapids Park
next month.
But what about Fido and
friends?
Dogs will be getting new
water bowls inside the dog
park at KRP in the coming
months.
Members of the Keizer
Parks and Recreation Advisory
Board approved using mon-
ey for the project from their
matching grant program at a
recent meeting.
Jeanne Bond-Esser, a for-
mer Parks Board member,
made the request on behalf
of the Keizer Parks Founda-
tion. The cost estimate for the
project was $3,100 with Bond-
Esser requesting $1,500 of that
to come from the matching
grant program, which was a
new program for this fi scal
year. The request was approved
unanimously.
Bond-Esser said the project
would entail two water bowls
and extending water lines in-
side the dog park from the cur-
rent fountain on the outside.
“We have raised money
through donations,” she said.
“We’ve been holding onto
some of the money. It is oper-
ated by stepping on a button.
With this, people don’t have to
take their dogs outside the dog
park to get water. These bowls
empty themselves so there’s no
standing water.”
Bond-Esser and Bill Law-
yer, Public Works director for
Keizer, both noted the current
water fountain on the outside
of the dog park is currently the
only drinking fountain at KRP.
Hence, they didn’t recommend
simply moving the current
fountain inside the dog park.
Lawyer said the $3,100 fi g-
ure includes all material and
labor costs.
“That more than covers it,”
he said.
In response to a drainage
question from Clint Holland,
Lawyer said drain rock would
be put under the fountains.
“It has worked out well so
far,” Lawyer said.
With the approval, Lawyer
said the fountains would be or-
dered and installed by city staff.
Since the matching grant funds
go through June 30, he noted
materials need to be in hand by
then but the labor doesn’t need
to be completed by then.
“Our goal would be to have
it done by the end of June,”
Lawyer said.
Beware: Love (Love) is in the air

There are some familiar
things with this picture.
Love Love Teriyaki II has
opened in Keizer Station. The
restaurant, located at 6385 Ulali
Drive, had a soft opening April
28 and is scheduled to have a
grand opening with ribbon
cutting next Monday, May 11.
The building formerly
housed Adobo Republic, a
Filipino restaurant run by Joey
Samonte with plenty of help
from family members.
Guess who has been brought
on board as the business devel-
opment manager of Love Love?
Yep, Joey Samonte.
The similarities don’t end
there. Adobo Republic was a
family-run business; the new
Love Love in Keizer Station is
owned by Mi Young Watson,
whose family members have
opened other teriyaki restau-
rants around Oregon and Wash-
ington over the past 27 years.
“This is a family franchise
right now,” Samonte said of
Love Love. “We are develop-
ing a franchise business. We’re
organizing every Love Love so
everything is pretty much the
same.”
Watson noted her sister
started two restaurants in the
Olympia, Wash. area 27 years
ago. Family members have since
opened locations in downtown
Salem, north Salem (by Fred
Meyer) and Albany. Watson likes
the location of Keizer Station.
“This is a better location,”
she said. “This is a good fi t for
us.”
The location became avail-
able when Adobo Republic
closed last fall.
“My wife (Tina) had a medi-
cal problem and could not keep
up with it. She had a stroke in
September and had to recuper-
ate for a while,” said Samonte,
who noted Tina is doing better
now. “We closed in October.”
The following month, Wat-
son came to look at the loca-
tion.
Chipotle to open May 21
Another restaurant is about
to open in Keizer Station.
Danielle Winslow, a Public
Relations and Marketing of-
fi cial with Chipotle Mexican
Grill, said the restaurant is on
track to open soon.
“It looks like the restaurant
plans to open on May 21,”
Winslow said.
That makes three new res-
taurants in short succession for
Keizer Station.
Chipotle is a Colorado-
based company started in 1993.
It is considered a “fast casual”
restaurant, meaning fast food
speed with higher food quality.
“For more than two decades
we have been committed to
serving our customers better
food, from more sustainable in-
gredients prepared using classic
cooking techniques, and we are
very excited to bring that com-
mitment to Keizer where we
already feel so welcomed by the
community,” Winslow said.
The Chipotle location
in Keizer Station is part of a
new building on Keizer Sta-
tion Boulevard alongside the
Old Navy. In between is the
maurices clothing store which
opened in March.

the Keizer Station location.

“She was focused on open-
ing this,” Samonte said. “In late
December we talked about it.
She would ask reference points
about how I did things here.
That developed into the devel-
oping of businesses. We talked
about my restaurant and her
restaurant. We exchanged notes
and compared things. There
were a lot of things we talked
about.
“When we came about this
plan for a franchise, she was ex-
cited about it and so were oth-
er members of the family,” he
added. “She had me come on
board as the business develop-
ment manager.”
Samonte noted his main of-
fi ce is at Crema Cafe and Sushi
in Salem, another Watson busi-
ness. Samonte’s daughters are
helping to run that sushi busi-
ness. He likes the changes made
to his former restaurant.
“This was a shell when we
came in, so however it looked
was okay,” he said. “Seeing this
now with the developments
and improvements, I’m even
happier. It still feels like home.”
And a busy one, as Samonte
