Celt boys rout Vikings
on the tennis court
By ERIC A. HOWALD
Of the Keizertimes
Aside from a 6-2 win, the
McNary High School boys
varsity tennis teams pulled a
number of surprises out of
their hats in a match with
North Salem High School
Wednesday, April 1.
“Maybe they don’t have
the more fi ne-tuned strokes,
but they analyze the op-
ponent, play to their own
strengths, run everything
down and even fi gure out
their opponents’ weaknesses,”
said Lisa Reid, McNary head
coach.
The good day started with
a win by Roman Kuklica in
the No. 1 doubles spot. He
won with set scores of 6-2
and 6-0. Junior Luis Audelo
followed him with a win in
three sets.
“At fi rst, I was frustrated,
“It was only
a two-set
match but he
dug deep.”

but calmed down and played
better. Then he got frustrated.
Once it was tied 1-1, I kept
my cool,” Audelo said. His set
scores were 4-6, 7-5 and 6-1.
Alphonso Pacheco won in
consecutive sets of 6-3 and
6-4.
“It was only a two-set
match, but he dug deep,”
Reid said.
In doubles matches, Dante
Garibay and Hayden Sader
staged the comeback of the
evening.
After losing the fi rst set
4-6, Garibay and Sader were
on the ropes at match point
in the second set when they
rallied to win 7-6. They won
the third set 6-1.
Sam Farr and Carlos
Flores won in sets of 6-3 and
6-1. Pedro Reyes and Isaiah
Forsythe won in sets of 7-5
and 6-2.
“It was a great day for our
team from top to bottom,”
Reid said.
Audelo said the Celts per-
formed well because they’ve
relied on each other.
“We can get better by just
working together and sup-
porting each other by help-
ing each other with the little
things. We can learn some-
thing new every day out
here,” he said.
