Flood research continues for KPIC By CRAIG MURPHY Of the Keizertimes Members of the Keizer Points of Interest Committee (KPIC) are looking for infor- mation about past fl oods in the city. So why not look through old family books? That’s just what KPIC mem- ber Kris Adams did recently. KPIC members are working on a project that will culminate with a kiosk at Keizer Rapids Park detailing some of the big- gest fl oods of the Willamette River in the Keizer area. The topic has been discussed at re- cent KPIC meetings, including the one on March 17. “I found this little book we had, about the 1964 fl ood I’m doing,” Adams said. “One tiny section talks about Keizer. That have a picture; that’s my house. I found more about the Christ- mas fl ood of 1964 but there’s not as much about Keizer on- line. There are still a few things.” Adams noted she was quite young when her family got the book. “I was only 5,” she said. “My parents bought the book for $1. We’ve kept it.” Roland Herrera, the Keizer City Council liaison to KPIC, noted local newspapers had some great pictures of the 1996 fl oods which could be tracked down. KPIC member Erica Hed- berg noted she has made some progress in getting information about the 1890 fl ood. “I found a picture of my fl ood,” she said. “The Marion Sam Goesch CLU, Agent Sam Goesch Ins Agcy Inc 3975 River Road North Keizer, OR 97303 Bus: 503-393-6252 Web: SamGoesch.com State Farm , Bloomington, IL APRIL 3, 2015, KEIZERTIMES, PAGE A3 County Historical Society had pictures of that plus the one from 1964. A lot were from Salem, some were from Keizer, I’m just not sure where.” Debbie Lockhart, deputy city recorder for Keizer, said KPIC members have the free- dom to decide how the infor- mation gets presented. “Pictures are good, then you could do a few explanatory things,” Lockhart said. “There could even be statistics like how long the fl ood lasted and how high it got.” Hedberg noted she found one website with information about what caused the area to fl ood. Anita Zahniser noted some past Oral History interviews – another ongoing KPIC project – have mentions of the 1943 fl oods. She suggested getting a group together to share their memories. “Wouldn’t that be fun to have a panel interview talking just about the fl ood?” Zahniser asked. In other business March 17: • KPIC members discussed people that could be inter- viewed for the Oral History project. Zahniser noted Jerry McGee wanted his redone, while Adams is looking to do some of the Zielinski fam- ily members. The idea was also brought up to do the Boucher family. • It was confirmed the new sign honoring Japanese his- tory in the area was recently in- stalled in the kiosk at Pfc. Ryan J. Hill Memorial Park in Keizer Station. The sign is on the other side of one honoring Marie Dorion. “I encourage everyone to go out and see it,” Jill Bonney-Hill said.
