At Whiteaker Middle
School, 128 students are tak-
ing part in enrichment activi-
ties after school several days
each week.
Options run the gamut
from sports like wrestling, vol-
leyball and fencing to art and
knitting clubs.
“We now have 10 girls
who have learned how to
knit,” said Michele Husseman,
enrichment program coordi-
nator.
In addition to exposing
students to new activities and
hobbies, Husseman said she
strives to reach students who
otherwise might go home to
an empty house. Providing a
hot meal and an activity bus
has also boosted participation.
“Wrestling is the best
choice I’ve ever made because
Keizerite to sing at Faith Baptist
Elizabeth Anderson of
Keizer, and a member of
Women’s Chamber Choir
of The Master’s College of
Santa Clarita, Calif., will
perform with the 15-mem-
ber ensemble at Faith Baptist
Church at 7 p.m. on Monday,
March 9.
Elizabeth is the daughter
of Lois and Bruce Anderson
of Keizer.

it helps me lose weight, gain
strength and it builds my con-
fi dence,” said Coleman Young,
a Wolverine seventh grader.
Wrestling, which is offered
by WMS teacher Kelly Hafer,
got an extra boost this season
when an anonymous donor
gifted the program with 30
pairs of nearly new wrestling
shoes. Fifteen students are al-
ready making use of the do-
nation.
The programs also provides
incentive in the classroom.
“Wrestling is a really good
sport. I keep my grades up so
I can do it,” said Josue Reyes.
Husseman has seen the En-
richment Academy pay off in
numerous ways.
“Students’ attendance has
improved as kids are more
engaged in school and the
community. The Enrichment
Academy classes are also a
great way for staff to interact
with students in a more infor-
mal manner,” she said.
She is always looking for
new volunteers to share their
talents and hobbies.
“I would love have to
someone help with a program
called Lemonade Day. Another
program I would like to offer
is called ScienceGirls,” she said.
Lemonade Day is a pro-
gram for young entrepreneurs.

The play is the Bard’s take on
romantic comedy as characters
fall in and out of love during the
course of a weekend. Auditions
are set for May 23 from noon
to 2 p.m. at the Keizer Civic
Center Gazebo.
MHT’s
fi nal
show of the year
will be Doubt,
A Parable by
John
Patrick
Shanley.
The
drama, which tells
the story of a priest suspected
of illicit behavior, is less about
scandal than the pitfalls of
moral certainty. Shanley won
the Pulitzer Prize for his script
in 2005. The show went on to
win a Tony Award.

Spare a pair for
church’s Haiti trip?
Countryside
Christian
Church in Keizer is conduct-
ing a shoe collection drive on
March 7 from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. at Keizer Albertsons on
5450 River Road North to
raise funds for their July 2015
mission trip to Haiti.
The group Funds2Orgs
will purchase new or gently
worn shoes and the church
will use the funds to fi nance
the trip. Funds2Orgs will re-
distribute shoes to their net-
work of microenterprise part-
ners in developing nations.
Funds2Orgs helps impover-
ished people start, maintain
and grow businesses in coun-
tries such as Haiti, Honduras
and other nations in Central
America and Africa.
Proceeds from the shoe
sales are used to feed, clothe
and house their families. One
budding entrepreneur in Haiti
even earned enough to send
to her son to law school.
“We are excited about our
shoe drive,” said Monica Gi-
rod, event coordinator and
mission trip participant. “We
know that most people have
extra shoes in their closets
they would like to donate to
us and help those less fortu-
nate become self-suffi cient.
It’s a win-win for everyone.”
Shoes will continue to be
collected at the church, lo-
cated at 5775 McLeod Lane
NE in Keizer, through April 1.
