Inspection pre-empts budding fi re
A fi re inspection at Ameri-
can Classic Barber Shop, 4196
River Road N., allowed Keiz-
er Fire District to quash a fi re
before it could cause major
damage.
Greg Biben, a fi refi ghter/
paramedic with KFD, was
working through his inspec-
tion route Thursday, Feb. 5,
when shop owner David Box
was showing him an electrical
panel. Biben noticed a fl icker
of light behind it.
The fl icker turned out
to be a small electrical short
above the fuse panel. The short
was causing a small fl ame be-
hind the metal pipe and wood
veneer wall of the building.
Biben shut off the electrical
breakers and the small fi re died
down. He then contacted the
KFD engine crew to assist in
searching for possible fi re ex-
tension in the walls and ceiling.
The engine carries a thermal
imaging camera that allows
fi refi ghters to see heat though
walls and ceilings without cre-
ating holes or damage.
Only the electrical panel
was damaged as a result of the
timely visit. Repairs are in the
works and the shop may be
closed intermittently while
work continues.
“I am so thankful Greg
came by to do my fi re inspec-
tion when he did, he saved my
business,” said Box in a press
release.
