An unfortunate set of cir-
cumstances proved fatal last
Thursday, Jan. 15.
According to a release
from the Salem Police De-
partment, 77-year-old Da-
vid McGregor of Salem was
attempting to cross Center
Street around 5:45 a.m. that
day when he was struck and
killed by a van driven by
64-year-old Stephen Bu-
chanan of Keizer.
“Mr. McGregor was in
an unmarked crosswalk at-
tempting to cross Center
Street from the south side to
the north side when he was
struck by the 2005 full-sized
van being operated by Mr.
Buchanan,” the release stated.
“He was wearing dark cloth-
ing and was walking very
slowly with a cane at the time
of the incident.”
McGregor
was
pro-
nounced dead at the scene.
sudoku
Buchanan stopped immedi-
ately and cooperated with
the investigation into the
incident. Center Street was
closed for more than three
hours as offi cials reconstruct-
ed the accident scene.
No arrests were made and
no citations were issued as
the investigation continues.
In light of the incident,
the SPD issued a reminder
of safety tips for pedestrians.
These tips include being vis-
ible and vigilant while walk-
ing on and around roadways,
crossing roads at intersections
and in crosswalks, looking
both ways before crossing any
road and making eye contact
with approaching drivers, not
assuming drivers see you just
because you are in a cross-
walk, wearing bright and re-
fl ective clothing and carrying
a light as well as having some
type of fl ashing light to im-
prove the chances of being
seen.
