MHS junior designs logo for new tech school
By ERIC A. HOWALD
Of the Keizertimes
Aimee Williams, as a junior
at McNary High School, has
left her mark in several places
around Keizer.
Last year, she came up with
winning designs of T-shirts for
two Keizer elementary schools
and the Lady Celt Powder
Puff football game. Last week,
she found out her treatment
of a logo for Salem-Keizer
School District’s Career Tech-
nical Education Center will
likely adorn the new school
for decades to come.
“It’s really exciting. They
just showed me some con-
cept drawing for how it will
look on the building and it’s
an honor for the design to be
mine,” Williams said.
Williams’ stint in Todd Lay-
ton’s graphic design classes at
McNary began in her sopho-
more year and she’s taken two
courses from him each semes-
ter since she started.
“I love doing this work and
making logos. I want to go
to school for graphic design,
but I still have some time to
choose,” she said.
McNary students were
the only ones involved in the
logo project, but it’s another
feather in the cap for Layton
and his students. Last spring,
another student of his created
the new logo for the Greater
Valley Conference, the OSAA
league that replaced the Cen-
tral Valley Conference.
“I am excited with the
amount of success and no-
toriety that has come sur-
rounding our design work. I

the difference lately has been
that people outside of the
school are realizing that these
students create some really
good designs,” said Layton. “I

to do more (projects like the
CTEC logo) in the future.”
As for Williams’ work in
particular, Layton said her
strength is in her willing-
ness to be part of a team that
makes an overall concept
work better. For example, se-
nior Megan Douglas designed
the poster for McNary’s up-
coming production of Legally
Blonde, but it was Williams’
silhouetted character work
that is the centerpiece of the
poster.
“I think the thing that
stands out the most for her is
that she is really good coming
up with the artistic elements
for the design. She works re-

Library hosting tea social
Sunday, Feb. 8, will be tea
time at the Keizer Commu-
nity Library. The library is
hosting an afternoon tea at
the Keizer Heritage Center
at 1:30 p.m. featuring a multi-
course tea menu. Tickets for
the affair are $25 each; pro-
ceeds will benefi t the volun-
teer-operated library and its
programs.
Live music will be pro-
vided by The Bonfi re Bettys.
Organizers urge attendees to
wear gloves and a hat; there
will be an exhibit of vintage
ally hard at designing interest-
ing, eye-catching elements,”
Layton said. “Her designs are
very good while usually be-
ing completely different than
everyone else on the design
team.”
Former McNary Princi-
pal John Honey is planning
principal for the new school
which will be located on
Portland Road in Salem. He
said Williams’ logo was select-
ed for its clean simplicity.
“More importantly, when
staff at the Salem-Keizer
School District offi ce were
polled, the image created by
Aimee just resonated with
people,” Honey said. “Sarah
Whitney, the graphic artist at
Inhouse Graphics, then used
Aimee’s concept to develop a
logo that was a bit more re-
fi ned and that is how we got
the fi nal palette of logos and
fonts.”
Honey said Williams’ logo
might be up on the building
signage as soon as next month.
For Williams, the selection
is still sinking in.
