January first 1919 the Ford
Motor Company began equipping
enclosed ears with this new sta rt­
ing system. Ford engineer« say
that although the entire system •
Starter and Generator • weighs
only thirty-one pounds, it pro­
duces a higher torque output
(constant rotary motion) pound
for pound, than any other system
on the market.
W h e n the department for
building the Starter and Light­
ing S stems first began produc­
tion. fifty hours l a b o r wa s
charged to each unit, but now
that machinery and equipment
have been installed, the time i>or
unit is four hours. Two huge
armature impregnating ovens
have been installed, each with a
capacity cf 1700 every eight
hours. In these ovens the urma-
tures are dried, soaked in varnish
and dried again. Eight hours
time is required for this one
ope ration.
The power from the motor is
applied through the well known
Benpix drive, which automatic­
ally engages the starter and then,
once the motor is started, the
starter immediately disengages.
It is equipped with oilless bear­
ings and needs practically no at­
tention.
Within another thirty days or
six week,, the Ford Company ex­
pects to bo making enough
starters so that every Ford car
will be equipped with the new
Electric Starting and Lighting
System.
