During the advance on the hill Manning's platoon commander was killed, and Just as the line reached the crest of the hill the platoon ser geant fell. Corporal Manning then assumed command of the platoon. Though he himself was severely wounded and was the only survivor of his squad, this sol. dler led forward the 36 remaining men of the platoon against an enemy strong point, wired, entrenched and defended by machine guns, which dom inated the Ourcq valley.
