W .y Ceppare Seef sai Coal Swift & Company has frequently stated that its profit on beef averages only one- fourth of a cent a pound, and hence hus piaciiciilly no effect on the price. C .•.p~rison has been made Fy the Federal T i. ic Commission of this profit w ith the profit on coat, and it has pointed out that anthracite cj»sl operators are content with n profit of 25 cents a ton, whereas the beef profit of one-foui th of a cent a pound means a pixjfit of $5.00 a ton. T he comparison does not point out that anthracite coal at the seaboard is .orth at wholesale about $7.00 a te n, w hereas a ton of beef of fair quality is w orth ab^ut $400.00 wholesale. T o carry the comparison further, the 25 cent profit on coal is 3 ^ per cent of the $7.00 value. T he $** 00 profit on beeF is only 1% per cent of the $'t00.00 value. T h e profit ha3 little efTect on p r’ce in eith er case, but has less effect on the price ot beef th an on the price of coal.
