London.— A British airman flying a powerful machine at 1(1.000 feet over Ostend recently had the machine’s tail shot off by the direct hit o f a shell, a very unusual occurrence. The machine turned upside down, out o f control, and the pilot we* thrown out o f his seat. By some in explicable maneuver he managed to clamber onto the bottom o f the fusel age o f the machine astride o f which he sat as if he was riding a horse. Thongh the machine was out o f con trol. owing to the loss at its ted planes, yet by moving forward and backward he so managed to balance it that it glided steadily downward, although it was upside down. H e successfully brought it across the German lines ami came safely to within a few hundred feet o f the ground. Then he crashed and was In jured, but Is now recovering in hos pital. When it is considered that this in cident occurred at a height o f 18,000 feet, over hostile territory, and that during the airman’s terribly precarious ride he was subject to anti-aircraft fire and liable to the attack o f hostile scouts, it is not too much to say that his is a record achievement. Recently another airman was shot down, out o f control, fr * n lS.i-00 feet, and fell, fluttering like.ji leaf toward the ground. At n height o f 0.000 feet he fainted. Shortly aft**r m l he came to. and found himself In the ma chine upside down in a marsh, unhurt. .
