I LI In one of our exchanges under date of May 20. 1018. it said yesterday was Mother’s Day. We sent mother a letter or a bouquet M W or a telegram; or we visited with her and talked and talked and, perhaps told her some things that have been in our heart but which sons and daughters seem to he able to express on only a few occasions. Mother was happy yesterday. She doesn’t ask for attention and I++-H-++++++++++++++++++-M+++++++++++++M-++++++J consideration and little expressions of appreciation—but she enjoys them and she will remember them long after the donors will have forgotten them. The letter which she received will be put safely, but a ++ quietly, away so that she may read it again and again. The flowers will carry fragrance and comfort to her long after the petals have ++ ++-M-+++++++-M-+++++++-M-++++++++-M--*-*-l-+++++++ dropped off. The good words will remain in her mind for months, if not years, after the sons and daughters will have forgotten that Saturdays Program will portray they had been expressed. But why not make Mother’s Day out of today and tomorrow? Mothers have not reared their families and given the sons and daughters their training and help and comfort and cheer by offering - IN— their services on only one day a year. Mothers work the year round “E X I L E ” for their children. So why shouldn’t the children work the year round for mothers? ++++++•!•+■ ■ ++++++++ <• into a better man. Mighty is the unending influence of Mother. On the blue mountains of our dim, distant childhood you and I can look back and see the path that Mother marked out for us. And how far from the way we have gone! Oh, what a wonderful gift God made to the world when He sent the mother to men! Somewhere I have read something about the sins of fath ers being visited on their children. Somewhere in France the virtues of mothers accompany the American army. Somewhere in France the wireless of affection is working right now between mother and son. A mother’s gentle, sincere and silent prayer goes straight to the throne of God and then back to her boy. It can’t miss. You tell me heaven is a long way off, and it is if a boy’s mother is there. Do you know. I believe one letter from a mother to her soldier son is worth more than a sermon from Cape Cod to Cape Colony. If a boy, in this terrible struggle, should forget his God during a fight and only remember his mother when wounded or dying, I am just enough acquainted with God to be able to assure the boy that it will be well with his soul. In this war there is one human that makes the supreme sacrifice—the soldier’s mother. T his Is the slogan of the Board of D irectors of the Fair, who are leav ing nothing undone that will help to m ake the Fifty-seventh Annual Fair th e biggest and best ever held. Ore gon has an enviable reputation for alw ays being Just a little ahead of every other state and her slate fair is to be no exception. Secretary A. H. Lea, announces many new fea tures of an interesting and instructive nature in the way of exhibits and program s and as President Wilson has advocated the continuance of fairs this year, despite the terrible crisis confronting the country, it is expected that the attendance will be very large.
