A million and a quarter men already in Europe. A million and a quarter freight ears to haul their necessaries to Atlantic ports. There ^ will soon be two million. Perhaps five. Five million carloads, llow manv million more to fill contracts with our Allies? Would any patriot add needlessly to the burden of the Govern ment in administering the railroads? Would he order from *tnail order houses anything that he could get at home? There is very little bought by mail that cannot lie bought right here in Stayton. Perhaps this is some more of the German propaganda, floated about to stir up feeling hetv < n the two big countries of North America. Anyway, it is entirely without foundation. There has never been a time when t í Americans wore not graciously received in every part of the Dominion and given every courtesy possible. All that Canada is asking is. ‘*Are vou a genuine American? Satisfied on tlm^poiut her ga’es are wide open and the country is yours. If she stops to question those who knock at her doors she is doing no more than we are. These are times when every one must prove his*loyalty to the land and fraudulent Americans or Canadians must be detained. If you nre| all right, don’t worry—Canada welcomes you more than ever. Don’t look for the following advertisement in the windows of Stayton stores. It was displayed lately in a larger town than this, though the mental stature that dictated it ean hardly rank among the giants: “ You cannot all serve in the army,” it ran. “ But you can all look military.” “ Onr suits and overcoats are all cut close to the military' pattern, and inspire in the wearer a feeling of patriotic devotion. ” Put more briefly the advertisement might run: “ If you can’t be a hero, b" an organ-grinder’s monkey.” « The charge that flag-waving is often made a substitute for patriotism is not always mad»* unjustly. Our parades, our salutes to the flag, the act of standing during the national anthem, the applause in theatres when patriotic sentintents are uttered—all these are valuable exereis. c. but they involve no sacrifice. We enjoy them. They are part of the entertainment for which we pay the box office cashier and like most of the diversions that gratify a healthy mind, they tend to edification. But don’t kid yourself that you are Paul Revere’s grandson when you give your emotions a joy-ride. Chcv/ir LILLY H ARDW ARE C O . ! U CANADIAN HOSPITALITY ATTACKED l Real G .
