The following letter ha« i>oen received by Mrs. P. H. Lambert from her son Frank from Camp Kearney Cal., and will be read with interest bv his friends: Camp Kearney Cal., July 14. Dear mother; 1 arrived this morning at six o ’clock, I can’t Hay how I like it here yet. It was some hot yes terday. Well I am well at present and hope thene few lines will find you all the Name. It seems to me that it is awfully dry in Califor nia. We saw some pretty coun try on the trip. There were fi20 men on the train that I was on. The women o f the Ked Cross treated us boys fine. They aave us 25 gallons of ice cream and they would be at the train to give us |x>stal cards at every stop where we could step off the train. At one station there was one man that treated all of us boys to icecream and he said “ we are not here for nothing boys, we are with you boys and we are going to stick with you fellows.” We didn’ t go to bed last night until we passed through San Die go. I wanted to see the city but it was midnight when we went through so we could not see much of it. We are nine miles from the Mexican border. I think it is going to be awfully hot here. We are pretty well south to be sure. I tell you the mountains were sure rugged. We went through 50 tunnels 1 am sure coming tnrough the mountains. There was one two and one-half miles long. It was sure a long one. It got pretty hot before we got through it. Well they haven’ t the camp fixed up like Camp Ia*wis. Camp Lewis is sure fine beside this camp to this boy. The chaplain had been decorated with the military cross, and his com mander said in speaking of him thut he had won the cross many times because o f his bravery and fearlesness. He was carrying a wounded comrade to the rear on the afternoon of April 1) during the first Spring offensive o f the Germans when a shell exploded near him inflicting the wound that caused his death.
