Brown To the citizens of Marion County: I have been taken to task by iti) frier.ds for not making an active campaign in behalf of my candidacy for the office of State Senator, it has also been hinted that I am indifferent as to the outcome. I have finally decided to make known the real reason in this open letter. If I had made an active cam paign over the County I would be compelled to put an extra man in my place on the farm, and as there is such a shortage of laoor I feel it my duty to get along with the least force possible; you being busy with your own affairs, and the present state of our counfry. 1 hardly think it right to take up your time in order to further my own political ambit ions. The Legislature of this State will go on whether I am a mem- berof it or not. but your country will not go on unless we lay aside our own ambitions, and exert ourselves to the utmost to back up the boys that are going across to fight. My record as a member of the Lower House during the Iasi two sessins is known to you. and it is for you to say whether I should serve you in the senate, and I am willing to abide by your decision. Respectfully submitted Sam H. Brown The Gervias Farmer An eight reel war picture will be shown at the Star theatre on '. T h e size cf a business depends upon the re ed s w hich that business is called upon to serve, A business should be a* big as its job. You do not drive tacks w ith a pile- driver—or piles w ith a tack-ham m er. Swift & Company’s growth has been the natural and inevitable result of na tional and international needs. Large-scale production and distribution are necessary to convert the live stock of the West into meat and by-products, and to distribute them over long distances to the consuming centers of the East and abroad. Only an organization like th at of Swift ft Company, w ith its m any packing plants, h u n dreds of distributing houses, snd thousands of refrigerator cars, w ould have been able to handle the varying seasonal supplies of live stock and m eet the present w ar em ergency by supplying, w ithout interruption: First—The U. S. soldiers and the Allies in Europe by shipping as much as 800 car loads of meat products in a single week! Second—The cantonments in the United States. Third—The retailers upon whom the American public depends for its daily supply of meat. B ut m any people ask—Do producers and consum ers pay too m uch for the complex service rendered? Everyone, w e believe, concedes the effi ciency of the Swift & Company organization —in performing a big job in a big w ay at a m inim um of expense. Swift ft Company’s total profit in 1917 was less than 4 cents on each dollar of sales of m eat and by-products. Elimination of this profit would have had practically no effect on live stock and m eat prices. Do you believe that this service can be rendered for lest by any other conceivable m ethod of organization or operation?
