When congress meets next it has before it two measures of the
utmost importance to the west. Satisfactory legislation of the de­
velopment of waterpowers and a relief measure for oil operation
under the Taft withdrawal order. Millions of dollars of capital to
be invested await fair legislation on these subjects.
Salem, $2,530,000 is estimated as total fruit, vegetable, and
grain yields in section tributary to here.
Grants Pass, 10 cars of apples shipped from here Sept 10, ar­
rived in London and sell for $3.50 per box.
Medford, large sawmill will be built here to operate about Feb.
1, when electric line will tap large timber tract on Jackson creek.
Portland, contracts for construction of 6 wooden motorships
have been awarded to American Ship Building company.
Albany, Fully «$150,000 worth of clover seed has been shipped
out of Linn county this year, most of it from here where it has
been concentrated from all parts of the country. About 20 cars
ranged from .$ 6,000 to -$10,000 per car.
Coos Bay, Hoquiam, Wash., men contemplate establishing
shingle mill in this vicinity with loo.ooo shingles daily capacity.
Winchester Bay, Preparations under way for work on Umpqua
jetty.
Bandon, preparations under way for construction of $3o,ooo
dredge for Port of Brandon.
Coos county plans expenditure of $600,000 in 1917 on perman­
ent road improvements.
If our government can say by law what wages shall be, it can
also provide imprisonment for strikers, and even for a single indi­
vidual that quits work. A very essential question is whether the
