Owing to the numerous business interests requiring the time and attention o f Mr. Hammond, and the fact that Mr. Bishop has withdrawn from the Company, makes
it a physical impossibility for him to devote the necessary personal attention to this store.
store would require the same careful personal management.
In order to keep the Stayton store up to the high standard o f the Salem
This cannot be done, hence the main and only reason for closing this store, and M. W. France, the
well-known Merchandise expert, has been engaged to take absolute charge o f the store and close every thing cut regal dless o f ccst or former selling ¡prices.
A REAL REASON-A REAL SALE
S ^ O w i n g to the demand upon my time, due to the retirem ent o f Mr. Bishop
from our firm, together with the increasing Salem business and my interests in
Portland. I find it impossible to give any personal attention to our Stavton
Store. As a result, I have decided to sell at or.ee at retail and have engaged
Mr. M. W . France to carry on this sale. Our Salem Store is so heavily stock
ed with fall merchandise that we cannot possibly find room fo r any portion o f
the Stayton stock. Consequently Mr. France has alsolute instructions to sell,
and to make prices so low that every dollars worth will be closed out in 10 days,
i f possible.
I t is a regret to close out our Stayton business as Mr. Peery has made a
splendid success o f the business from the start and if he can be induced to leave
Stayton we shall be greatly pleased to have him become associated with our
Salem Store.
Our pleasant relations with Stayton people will always be a source o f
pleasure.
Very Respectfully yours.
Winthrop Hammond

To close out an entir.- store in 10 days is a real job and requires untiring
effort. My several years experience in the m?r-handise business has proven to
me there is only one quick sure w ay to dispose o f a stock. This one way is to
make prices so low that nobody can afford not to buy.
1 am under contract to close this entire stock out in 10 days and no ex
cuse will be accepted if I fall down.
Its up to me to make good. Cost and
selling prices mean absolutely nothing to me, I have marked these goods at
prices I think will sell them and not at prices they ought to bring.
Remember
I am in absolute charge and what 1 say goes. When I sav sell this $20 suit for
$4.95 or this 50c collar fo r 5c its law and must be sold at the pr.ee I name.
Everyone is familiar with the quality o f merchandise carried and the excellent
reputation o f the Hammond-Bishop Co. To boy this quality from this firm at
the prices I am marking is like buying gold dollars for 25c. In order not to dis
appoint any o f the numerous friends and customers I urge you to come early and
not wait until what jo o want is gone.
Yours for business.
