The usual routine of passing on bills etc. was concluded without comment. A peUtion for lights in the west part of town was read and one more light ordered on Water street. Also several lights were granted on Virginia street as well as a cross walk on High street. Two petitions for liquor license were lead, one for Bailey and Berg, the oth er for Jones and Cornish. After some little discussion between councilman Murphy and Roy, the vote was taken resulting in three to one. Councilmen Murphy, Bpaniol and Blakely voting yea and councilman Roy voting no. The main Interest of the evening’s session centered around two petitions for etrect improvement of a permanent character, (paving) which had been prepared under the recent charter amendment. The two petitions em brace Second and Third streets from the south curb of Water street to the Salem ditch, and the four cross streets between these two. • On one petition 22 out of 33 property owners had signed, and on the other 12 out of 16 htyd affixed their names to the petitions. Remarks were thrown right and left during the general discussion that fol lowed in which several citizens aired both specific and general views on pav ing. •The mayor finally appointed a com mittee to consult an engineer and make arrangements to have plans and speci fications prepared to submit to the dif ferent paving companies. It really looks as if Stayton were go ing to pull herself out of the mud and have decent streets before next winter. Perhaps if we had, it might be an in ducement for some one to travel the streets in the rainy season. The Public Utility Law as related to the electric light plant was thoroughly discussed and laid over until the n e x t; meeting. The marshal was also in structed to enforce the curfew ordi nance. The work was of considerable size, as the channel was widened to sixty feet, and deepened to five feet, for a dis tance of 900 feet. Both the Stayton and Salem ditch people are thoroughly satisfied with the work, as it will supply plenty of water for the two ditches for a long time. The contract was completed in a remarkably short time considering the weather and other difficulties en countered. This job is on the same plane as others done by Contractor Teague, who is to b e congratulated on the high character of the work.
