Similarly, many have thought liint |ierliapa'at some distant time, when the seaa shall have lieen drunk up Into the cracked and thick ened crust of the age shrunken earth and the volcanoes—those vents of the llery Interior shall have become chok ed nnd extinct, the pentup ganea gener ated from the descending moisture by tho still great Internal heat may ac tually explode the old earth like a veritable bombshell. Hot that can never happen. In 18.S3 Krnkntoa, a sleepy old vol cano on a small Island In the strait o f Kunda, between Java and Sumatra, begun to show marked stgna o f uneasi ness. Round the volcano the quaking earth opened enormous Assures In the liottom o f the sea. down which rushed Niagaras o f water Then the fissures closed nnd confined the engulfed flood In the hot subterranean depths. The water was quickly converted Into steam, the atentn Into dissociated gases, without room for expansion. It exerted a pressure equal to that of the strongest dynamte. The great chimney o f Krakatoa. sealed since the memory o f man, bnrrcd the normal path o f escape. Higher nnd higher mounted the pres sure under the huge mass o f the vol cano; then, of a sudden, came a blast that netnnlly shook the earth. Never before In historic time bad there been such a shock. The whole top o f the old moiintnlu was blown Into the sky. The recoil wns distinctly felt clear through the terrestrial ball. This great cataclysm has been cited as an Indication o f tbo power o f the pentup forces thst may some day dis rupt the earth Itself. Let us examine the underlying principles thst must guide ns In pssslng Judgment on thn correctness o f this theory. An explosive coniponnd Is s combust ible combined mecbantcslly or chem ically either with oxygen or with an oxidizing substance that will burn with out the help o f atmospheric oxygen. Atnong the most powerful high ex plosives are nltrogelatln and picric acid, each o f which has a density more than one nnd a half times that o f water. The products o f their combus tion are nearly all gaseous, whereas the product* of the combustion o f ordinary black gunpowder are less than half gaseous The larger part la the solid matter that makes the smoke. The energy that a high explosive can exert depends on the volume o f tho gases liberated and the temperature to which the beat of the explosion can raise them. The exact temperature o f the gnses liberated by a high explosive nt the In stant of detonation Is not absolutely known, but may be approximately learned through chemical experiment Nor Is the amount o f pressure known with absolute certainty. It la probable, however, that nitroglycerin, nltrogels- tin nnd picric acid, when detonated In 11 confined space, exert a pressure some where between 300,000 and 600.000 pounds 10 the square Inch. if we nssiime that the earth crust has s density five times that o f water nnd Hint Its average thickness Is fifty miles, then It follows that It exerts a pressure of more than 600,000 pounds to tlie square Inch; If the crust Is a hundred miles thick, then the pressure is more than n million pounds to the square Inch a pressure certainly great er than the expansive force exerted by the most powerful high explosive. Plainly, no quantity o f high explosive detonated under the crust o f the earth would tie able to lift It. and consequent ly we know that no world o f the size o f the earth can ever explode from its own pentup Internal forces. Ir. then, no high explosive force Is su tile tent to blow up a world the size o f the earth, how enn worlds explode? There Is only one way In which the heavenly bodies can become possessed of sntllclent energy actually to blow up. and that Is by collision. The stars are flying about In space with velocities that range all the way from five miles a second to 600 miles a second If two celestial orb*, traveling each it n velocity o f 200 miles a second, met In n head on collision they would be fused and vast fled by the Impact, nnd 1 he heat generated would he sufficient to break up the matter of both Into Its illtlinnte elements nnd to expand It Into nebulous haze This Is the way In which science says that new suns, new nebulae nnd now stars are born.—Ilnd •on Maxim In Youth’s Companion.
