RIVER WORK NOW Postm aster Says PREPARING FOR WELLUNDER A ZTsZs L," Y W AY FAIR Good Force o( Men Clearing Surface in tbe Path of the Proposed New Channel TO USE STEAM SHOVEL FOR EXCAVATING WORK Improving River Will Prove Large One With between fifteen and twenty men and several teams clearing the surface for the proposed new channel o f the Santiam, work has begun in dcitd earn* esl on the river improvements to be made here by l.inn and Marion coun ties. That it is a task of some magni tude ia proven by the character of the river bed at the point where the work is going forward. A good sited force of workmen will have to I* employed for some time in making the desired changes. The work now being done is the clear ing away of surface obstacles that lie in the path of the proposed channel. This new channel will ru t away from the present stream at about three hun dred yards above the bridge, and will head staight for the center bridge span, instead of curt mg to the north us does the present channel. During the storm season a huge pile of driftwood became »lacked up at the point through which the cut must be made, and the work men are now engaged in clearing this away. To maku the work more difficult, the surface is strewn with boulders, and it is likely to prove a hnrd task to clear these away. The assistance of a steam shovel is expected in another day or so, but it is doubtful i f this contrivance will be able to handle the rocks very deftly. Should it be necessary to haul the material cxcavalodaway in wagons the work will assume much greater pro portions. Tom Smith is directing the force of men now on the job, which is made up of citizens residing in t h i s vicinity. Kiley Thomas who is at work with the crew, sustained a painful injury Tuesday. While cutting nwuy some of the driftwood, he lost his footing and fell, striking his head against a log. The blow cut a slight gash on his head and cheek, and split his ear. One of his riba was also cracked and his body badly bruised in the fall.
