of Portland. Mr. Crown and wlf<*
celebrated their golden wedding
In 1006 an event enjoyed
He waa a very energetic man
having been engaged In various
business enterprises In his native
slate, In Kansas and In Oregon,
being principally engaged In the
saw mill business.
About twenty-five years ago he
cam« to Htayton and purchased
the mill which was enlarged and
rebuilt and Improved until it Is
now one of the beat equipped
mills on the Coast. His business
foresight and energy launched
the enterprise which has since
grown Into the large Curtla Lum
ber Company of Mill City.
He enjoyed the distinction of
being the first Mayor of the town
of Htayton, and he saw the com
munity develop from a mere trad
ing point Into one of the best
towns In the Willamette Valley.
Perhaps Mr. Crown had as
few enemies as any man. He
had enjoyed the continued re
spect of those who knew him.
For about three years he had
been a great sufferer, and many
times his IlYe had been despaired
of and when his last sickness
came It was apparent that be
could not last many days.
On Sunday evening December
27 at six o’clock death came as
a relief. For about fifty years
he bad been an active Odd Fel
low. The funeral services were
held at the home and the burial
rites performed by the Htayton
Lodge 1.0.0 F
His aged companion and child
ren have the deepest sympathy
of the entire community..

Chinese pheasants should be pro
tected for five years, and then the
Imlt should only be five birds per
day—five Is enough for any man in
>ne day. The birds are now so scar
ce in this locality that a man has
to nearly run his legs off to get a
bird This overcomes the pleasure.—
