We have in this issue an article from THh OREGONIAN
of the 19 inst., which comes hon\e to many of our readers.
These young fellows worked in Stayton last summer, made
good money while here, and so far as we know have no
reason for taking up dishonorable vocations. They both
understand their professions of cement work and plumbing,
as several of our townsmen will admit from having work
performed by these fellows.
While here they made the acquaintance of the twin sis
ters, who later they wed and took to Portland. \\ e now
hear nothing good of these male characters who represent
themselves as men.
Is it not time that there be a standard established for
MEN before they are eligible to enter the marriage relation?
Are we, the citizens of this great United States, going for
ever onward in our great rush for Gold and forget the future
welfare of our daughters and sisters? it is high time that
we take some definite action not so much in proposing some
measure to the state legislature, but rather see to it that such
a measure is not only submitted, but passed and then en
forced.
Here we citizens of Stayton, aided in a financial way,
these characters who took from their home t\\ o young ladies
who resided near Stayton. Now look what disgrace has been
put upon one and perhaps both ot them. Men be men and
do not hesitate in doing your duty to yourself, your fellow
BARGAINS
man and your God in putting down such marriages as are
daily transpiring in our land.
Even animals think more of their mates than has the
greater proportion of vile wretches who ruin many a home
and drag to disgrace the daughters of our nation. This now
is io become a vital question to many whose homes haw
been invaded by human wolves, and the editor of the MAIL,
stands ready to assist in so far as his pow er lies the enloice
ment of a law that will have for its object the prevention of
union in marriage to such unworthy characters.
Fathers and mothers do not be too hasty in permitting
your daughters to accept die company of any stranger, for
you know not what is in store for the future, whether
grief or jov.
