of Portland or the other valley cities
and towns to forget the Albany Apple
Fair and the dedication of the new
Southern Pacific depot on Tuesday,
November 10th.
Two of the greatest displays of ap
pies ever made in the Pacific North­
west arc attractions for early in
December. One will commence at
Portlaud December 1st aud continue
for three days, wheu Spokane will t ike
the center oi the stage in this same
character of entertainment from Dec­
ember 7th to 12th.
The Portland Commercial Club had
two great over flow occasions last
week. There were more people pres­
ent Tuesday night to get election
returns than at any time since the
new building was erected. But the
greatest event, both in attendance and
importance was the banquet given
Friday night to mark the opening of
the “ North Bank Hoad,” with honored
guests including James J Hill, Chair­
man of the Board of Directors of the
Great Northern ; Howard Elliot. l ’re--
ident of the Northern Pacific; Louis
Goldendale, Washington, has given all the com­
munities of the Pacific Coast a record in raising
money tor advertising purposes, by giving 5 a.oo for
every man, woman and child within the city limits,
or a total of
$00.00 and this came in at the rate of
> i2 v 0 0 a minute.
During the last few days that the colonist rates
were effective more than twelve hundred people
came to Oregon on one w ay tickets to make tins
state their permanent home.

We are not expecting to have any favorable com­
ments on this issue but if possible we will try and

Linotype arrived this week but owing to a press of
business we were unable to have it set up. We
expect to have the machine in operation next week
and by the first of January will lx* able to give our

general news. It requires time to make i m p r o v e ­
