has charge of tin* smelter proposition
in that district in which the several
companies are now developing rich
copper pro|>«rties. He *«id that there
was no place presented to them — the
smelter jieople — that met with so
favorable a hearing ns tlie one on Gold
Creek. Everything is there that could
be desired and with the increased fa
cilities of the several mines in that
district it will l>e hut a very abort time
before the Smelter will lie running to
its utmost capacity. Mr Gadsden said
that it was an easy mutter lo increase
the capacity of the smeller, this would
be accomplished aa soon as there is
sufficient ore ready for treatment.
Much Enthusiasm
Heveral citizens spoke during the
meeting and much enthusiasm was
shown not only publicly hut financialy
as well. This community had certain*
ly done well in assisting what without
doubt will prove to be the beat invest
ment ever made by them. It is better
than a railroad, for it will bring a rail
road, and it is lietter than a milk con
denser for the present. The residents
of tliia section are awake to the fact
that the opening of paying mines
within thirty miles of thia town with
a direct outlet to Htayton with less
than a four per cent grade, will mean
a great increase in the assessed values
in the county ami will develop a home
market for all surplus produce.
Hopes Realized
J T Kearns who has had charge of
the stock sales in this section is now
to see his tiofies realized in the open
ing of a paying mining district on the
L ittle North Fork of the Santiam.
He has said for several years that it
wns only a matter of time until that
section would be one of the greatest
mining camps, if not the best camp
on the Pacific coast. W ith the present
developcmeut and the greAt bodies of
ore exposed there is but one thing
lacking to make his hopes come true
immediately, that is there is needed
a few thousand dollars more to com
plete the wagon road and install ad
ditional machinery to put the mines
in shape to deliver their quota per day
to the smelter.

On Tuesday of last week another
party left Htayton for the .Santiam
mines, more especially the Gold Creek
Mining A Milling Company properties
on Gold Creek. The party left Htay
ton aliout 7:30 in the morning arriving
at Gates for dinner.
The dinner furnished wa« one not
soon to be forgotten by tho-e who par
took of it. Mr Hansen had telephoned
ahead to Mr Anderson ami when the
party arrived they hail to wait but a
few minutes la-fore partu!:iug of the
bounteous repast. All pronounced it
the best meal they had had since they
left home. From Gates the party
went up the long incline and down
until they reached the Mehama road,
from there on for several miles the j
road was par excellence. Arriving at!
the Cummiugs home the patty stayed
over night and were taken on in tlie!
early morning to the end of the wagon
road which has been under construct- I
iou by the mine owners of the Hantiain
District but more especially by the j
Gold Creek Mining and M illing Com- !
pany. They have charge of the work
at present and the bridges which they |
are putting in will lie paid for by Mar- i
ion county. That in itself is a splendid
and commendable move on the part of
Marion County Comisiioners. They
do not realize how much the residents
of that section appreciate the ap
portionment for budges. With the
completion of the wagon road the
residents of that section can take their
surplus fruit, vegetables, etc to the
mines and find a ready market.
The citizens residing in the region
of Elkhoru and intervening territory
between Mehama have practically
demonstrated that fruit raisiug in
their section is but in its infancy. Tlie
finest apple« that ever were lasted
fell in the hands of the party while
on their way into the district. The
surprise expressed by those who ate of
the fruit was immense. There is no
place that can surpass this territory
in the production of choice fruit, and
few places can equal it.
